Why did Whitehurst risk his life for them?

He didn't seem all that close to Andy and DeSilva, and seemed like he was still just getting to know Andy. Did he just want to die?

Shelton was being was a total jerk to him since the beginning of the movie and so was the guy that cut his hair. I think he felt he wanted to prove himself.

I think seeing Chucky was "alive", scared him so much, he just couldn't process how to live anymore.

That grenade could've greatly injured or killed Andy, DeSilva, Tyler, and the rest of the troops so he decides to sacrifice himself for the safety of the others.

If I were whitehurst I'd jump at that chance..like he did lol. Except the saving people would be an afterthought, really. As well as an excuse.

I think it was an act of bravery, as he's probably always got *beep* for being a coward. But I still think, maybe he could have at least tried to throw it away out of danger, instead of covering it with himself..?

That's why I think part of him just wanted to die, as well. He was some picked on kid in a military school, for whatever reason.

The writers wanted to give the film 'some' depth. And Andy, Tyler were remotely nice to him. So yeah I can see why he decided to save them from the psychotic dolly.
