Is the movie as bad as everybody says it is?

Hi. Just to let you know, that I never seen the Buffy movie. Only the TV show. But I did hear some negative comments about it, And I just want to ask, is it really that bad? Do you recommend it? Do you just hate because there is no Sarah Michelle Gellar? And btw, I heard some characters mention that Buffy actually set the gymnasium on fire before moving to Sunnydale. Did this actually happen in the movie? Sorry. I know we are all entitled to our opinion, but I don't want to start watching it and be all like "this movie sucks!"

I'm quite fond of the movie. It is campy and fun, and it has many elements I love about the show. Of course the show is better, but it had much more time perfect itself. I thought Kristy Swanson made a great Buffy. I definitely recommend it.

Hilary Swank should've received a Razzie nomination.

I just watched this film again tonight, It's a real hoot in my opinion and was never meant to be more than a good fun film, a mickey take at the genre, at the 80's in a way too. If you lived through the 80's and watched films like Sixteen Candles and Pretty In Pink you would see exactly what the film is laughing at.

There are some hysterical scenes - the death scene towards the end - some great lines and some great fun.

It's terrific, cheesy - intentionally so - over-the-top fun.

Yes it's a bad movie.
But I think it was "meant" to be that way.
The movie doesn't take itself too seriously and was meant to be a dumb comedy in a way. It's sorta like a parody of itself.

I'm one of the few who liked it. It was making fun of the genre but without being WAY over the top like most satirical material is.

If you are a Buffy fan from the TV show-You may not like it. I saw it before the TV show came out. The TV show has much more of a serious tone, the movie is crazy. So, if your hoping for the TV Buffy you will be very disappointed.

This is probably too late to be of any help, but I just watched it. It's fun. Worth watching if you have a nostalgic soft spot for '90s pop culture. It is interesting to see the elements that actually did transfer over to the series, and to see Buffy as a vapid valley girl. Kristy Swanson made a really good Buffy. But man, you can tell there was some heavy re-writing from day to day. The movie is almost incoherent in places, with heavy "things happening just because" syndrome.

No, it certainly isn't

Horror/Comedy has always been an underappreciated and mostly misunderstood.

Buffy is geared more towards the comedy but there's some scary moments here and there. Buffy's dream where Lothos is in her bed is scarier than anything you'll find in the show.

I'm a fan of the show but the movie is good for what it is. People just take themselves too seriously.

Buffy has a really great cast, a great soundtrack, some absolutely classic lines and Kristy Swanson is excellent in the main role. There's much worse ways to spend 86 minutes.

You've clearly never watched the show, then.
