What was her "special purpose?"

The boy prophet told her the calling to the desert was either that 1) God had a special purpose for her, or 2) the voice was Satan.

I haven't seen this for a while, but I don't remember any "special purpose" that she fulfilled. I mean, she killed her kid and lost her faith in the desert. Surely that wasn't what God would have intended?

Was she misled by Satan instead?

I can only speculate on that: Her special purpose was similar to that of Pontius Pilate in 'The Master and Margarita'. And that is to be stuck in a paradoxical place between Hell and Salvation.
