Taeko's smile bugged me a lot!

What's up with that weird smile? Why was she drawn like that, with those wrinkles when she smiles? She looks like some 70-year old grandma, not a young girl in her 20s.

Everytime she smiled I had to cringe BECAUSE she looked like a totally different person. I can't explain why the animators did that. Anyone agree?

Bugged me too. At first I thought she was supposed to look fairly old (puzzling, since she lived in the city, she couldn't have had such a hard life so as to get wrinkled this early) - but then I noticed that the young girl she met in the village had the same old-looking face while smiling, so I realised it was just an animation style. But it was a little distracting indeed.

there's a highway that is curling up like smoke above her shoulder

I guess we're not used to seeing cheek creases in anime characters. Then again, the adults in the film seem to be more realistically-rendered than most from Ghibli productions.

Taeko's adult self seems a bit more 'plain' in looks than some other adult renditions by Ghibli in other films.

maybe its hinting at the idea that in Japan (and other places) to be a woman in her mid to late 20's and not married is a bit of a social stigma. The lines on her face seem to emphasize this thought.
