'#$%+ you, Sarah.'

"You're a lying bitch and if the cops weren't here I'd spit in your face."

I still can't believe Shane Black got away with that for his 'tender moment' ending, heh heh.

Still to this day, a very bizarre if not ballzy moment which I think is one of the reasons some people really hated this film when it was released. I think the amount of profanity in the film was too much to bare for most audiences at the time.

reply

It wasn't the profanity; it was the misogyny. As a 9 year-old child, I was able to pick up on it (I know; I shouldn't have been watching films like this at that age). I felt vindicated when I read Roger Ebert's review, years later, and saw he said the same thing.

But I liked that aspect of the movie. It made it more masculine and badass.

reply

@SeasonalAffective I'd say it's worse - it was misanthropy. In this movie men and women are treated like scum.

reply

For sure, but men get along better with men in this movie than with women.

reply

Just like real life.

"We'll be alive but like a nightmare. You drink blood, you won't wake up from nightmare."

reply

Misogyny?? Are you kidding? She was cheating on him! It's unbelievable how much crap that men are expected to put up with from women, lest they be labeled "misogynyst" or "stalker".

Did you not catch the conversation between them early in the movie about him not showing any emotion? She herself suggested that he say that.

reply

Exactly. It really was meant as a good-natured joke. :)

reply

Yes, she told him she'd like him to be more expressive, and tell her stuff like that.
So I thought it was a tender ending, with her asking for forgiveness and him showing that he was going to be more like she wants him to be.

reply

Yeah she actually told him that she wished he'd say something to show he cared. He was so distant that his apathy hurt worse than anything.

But I think it takes a couple of viewings before you pick up on this. It took me at least 10 before I got the earlier reference.

reply

I thought it was absolutely hilarious. If I remember correctly, he said f-ck you Sarah and paused for a second or two. When he then proceeded to repeat the rest of what she said earlier, I cracked up.

I actually found it to be endearing too, especially with Kame's awesome score kicking in.

^^I also thought that callback was a great and funny twist on the good old happily ever after cliche.

And while Willis' character is very depressed and cynical I never saw him as a misogynist.

Hell, he sacrifces his entire career by punching his boss in the face for beating up a hooker.

reply

Reminds me of Falling Down where Robert Duvall's characters says

*beep* you, Sargeant, *beep* you very much" after his Sargeant told him he never liked him because he never cursed.
