Best documentary ever on filmaking

This is without a doubt the best documentary ever on filmmaking. They should make every film student watch this movie. Harrowing - Brilliant.

I agree 100%. I think this, the doc Visions of Light, and the commentary version of El Mariachi should be required viewing.

reply

Awesome, I just watched it.

I especially like the naturalism, the honestly to human nature itself.

Francis talks about the filming progress and rubs his left tit, he doesnt give a *beep* about the glamour hollywood has become. Thats so cool

It is an exceptional doc and should be required viewing in film schools. It's also a film of great artistic and emotional courage, of truth and soul to power; E. Coppola's talent is matched only by her guts.

I go to NYU for film and have viewed Visions of Light, the commentary version of El Mariachi, and Hearts of Darkness as requirements for classes.

Amazing the support she gave him as he hocked the house and toys, to complete the production of what may have been the mother of movie flops. Whew!

reply

Are you joking? A good 1/3 of it is clips from the actual film.

The information presented therein is only relevant to the story of the making of Apocalypse Now. There's not much here that will benefit a film student, as a film student will not be dealing with typhoon, Marlon Brando, or the Vietnam war.

The Shining documentary shot by Kubricks daughter has much more interesting behind-the-scenes footage.

No, but they'll be dealing with their own films' setbacks, difficult actors and challenging topics.

Furthermore, "Hearts of Darkness" reveals a filmmaker & crew -- artists -- risking it all in a grand attempt to knock it out of the ballpark, which naturally shames filmmakers who are content to just 'make a living' churning out safe, mediocre, forgettable flicks.
