I just had to start a thread about Kate Nelligan who delivered a hilarious supporting performance as Frankie's co-worker and best pal at the restaurant. The accent she used was hysterical and I loved the way her character just unashamedly took Pacino to bed knowing that he was after Frankie and didn't care. It's hard to believe that this was the same year that Nelligan got an Oscar nomination playing Nick Nolte's mom in THE PRINCE OF TIDES, but you have never seen two characters so complete opposites.
I think she acts quite well in the movie nothing to say about that, she is an underrated actress that I wouldn`t mind seeing in some leading roles. Next to that she also have this "classic beauty" looks in my opinion.
Kate Nelligan is a highly underrated actress. I always admired her work through the years in "Dracula," "Eye of the Needle," "Without a Trace" and "Eleni." She kind of disappeared in the late 80's, doing some TV work and an obscure film or two...but 1991 was a comeback year for her, with the Oscar nomination for "The Prince of Tides" which she utterly deserved, and of course, "Frankie & Johnny" where she won the BAFTA and the National Board of Review for Supporting Actress.
Personally, I thought she should have won for "The Prince of Tides." She was simply incredible in that film, however, I often go back and forth between which film she SHOULD have been nominated for. "The Prince of Tides" was an Oscar-baited film, which the Academy did go for (however they snuffed Streisand). But, in the end, I think "Frankie & Johnny" is the better performance. Nelligan played against type, and she did beautifully. She was funny, believable and perfect.
But Oscar usually doesn't like to nominate comic performances, only rarely. So, they went with "Tides"...which was fine by me.
