The first Dead Space game was more like Event Horizon -- a team is sent out to answer a distress call from a starship, only to find it dark and silent, with the crew missing and evidence that some really bad #%£€ has gone down. I have not seen this 1991 Dead Space movie, although I'm wondering if its worth checking out because it's got Bryan Cranston, aka Walter White. Maybe he unintentionally releases the virus while cooking space meth.

The "dead space" thing is because near the Marker in the game story, the necromorphs don't come close, therefore a "dead space"... this is explained by creators...
Dead Space the game was most heavily inspired by the classic horror sci fi game System Shock 2. Also various horror films but mostly just SS2.
