10 rounds

Hey, do you know about the movie where Vanessa Redgrave and Keith Carradine go 10 rounds?
What, you mean in a fight?
Yep.
Vanessa Redgrave? No possible way!
But I saw it myself.

Now you know.

Man, this movie. Horrible. I love the ridiculous ending fight sequence.

She is kicking Carradine's ass, then her Dwarf brother(who apparently is in love with, or at least infatuated with Carradine)mysteriously is able to fly 30 feet in the air and knock her off of Carradine, who then knocks her out.

Man... I generally do not leave negative comments on movies, but this one is just simply ridiculous.

I taped it from IFC and just finished it. It took me three sittings. I didn't get it at all.

People keep talking about how she was in love with the "brokeback." I didn't get that impression at all. Where were signs that that had happened?

reply

Haha... I just finished watching my IFC taping of it, too -- I'm not sure *what* to think about it, actually. Except for the speech by the Reverend, which I took the time to add to the Memorable Quotes section... because it was eloquent and true and probably the whole point and best moment of the movie. (It will take time to show up there, I guess.)

As for the people talking... I took it as just that -- people talking. Just an exposition of the typical tongue/chin-wagging small town, where everyone knows everybody else's business, and they've got nothing better to do than to discuss it, pass judgment, and even add some imagination/embellishment as they see fit -- don't you remember in one of the very first scenes how they talked about how she had killed him (Cousin Lymon)... it was, like, the very first night he stayed there, and already they had s#!t to make up about it! Obviously, that wasn't true, either... Remember the old lady's comments about her "scarlet dress" and "living in sin"? Miss Amelia and Lymon obviously paid no heed and just laughed it off.

Additionally, "caring for" someone doesn't necessitate being "in love with" them. When Mary Hale says to Marvin Macy that "she cares for 'im", that really need only imply two things: 1) she looks after him/his welfare -- feeding him, putting him up at her house, etc.; and 2) she loves him as the new-found relation that he is (even gifting him with and/or explaining to him items of familial sentiment & value) -- she is obviously a lonely woman... and doesn't appear to be interested in a physical "love" relationship, such as the kind that Marvin originally wanted from her. Still... it's enough grounds for jealousy, even if it isn't the same thing as he what had been looking for -- he just wants to destroy her and make her unhappy. And after all that she's done for him, that little b@st@rd cousin of hers helps him do just that!!! And everybody just stood by and watched/let it happen! Yeah, that pretty much did suck. ;-p But... I suppose there was an underlying current of sympathy for Marvin that sort of said that she somewhat had it comin'.

I have to disagree that Amelia's feelings for Lymon weren't romantic in nature. She tried to kiss him. Yes, out at the still when they were both drinking, she kissed him on the mouth in an obvious attempt to show her true feelings and arouse him. He pushed her away with a laugh. She later in that scene pretended to fall into the swamp in order to see if he cared if she was alright.

reply

Oh yea. I wasn't sure about that. You are right. She did kiss him.

reply

Yes. I reckon that this has the best man vs woman fight in any movie I've seen to date.

I felt guilty about laughing so much at the flying midget part of the action. But I couldn't help it.
