Why do the Graboids in the film look nothing like the one on the poster?

I've just noticed that the poster shows a Graboid that basically looks like a giant snake with teeth and eyes. Yet the Graboids in the film look nothing like it!

For the same reason a Whopper doesn't look like the one in Burger King ads.

It seems like one of those "Jaws" poster imitations, either way it looks awesome.

It's the same as passport photos you never look the same the camara all ways puts on ten pounds

The tentacles look like that with less prominent, if any, teeth.
