Yeah, Home Alone was released plus it wasn't a big musical film so people either didn't see it or didn't care. It's such a great movie, it's a shame. Disney really didn't attempt another movie like this until Lilo & Stitch.

Agreed, marketing was the biggest issue that really hurt this film. Also, in addition to that, it came out amidst other Australia themed movies which made it seem less novel of a story. As to the musical aspect... yeah... I see what the others mean by it not having any musical solos. That being said, this movie is on my list of favorites for it's soundtrack as I am a sucker for strong brass section.

Because of the wisdom of film executives!

According to the documentary: Waking Sleeping Beauty, the film made "only" 5,000,000 the first weekend and Disney decided to pull all of the marketing for the film and not give it a chance to gain an audience over time.

Watching that documentary, I came to a conclusion that Katzenberg is a doofus when it comes to marketing. If anything they should've increased marketing to raise awareness of the film.

It's just like his recent pushing of 3D, then when his own Dreamworks films do weak domestically but decently overseas, he chews out the format he pushed and dismisses it as worthless. What a doofus.

Ain't you forgetting Atlantis: The Lost Empire?
That wasn't a musical.

And that flopped too. Message: Stick to musicals Disney Animation.

I couldn't really care much whether a film's a musical or otherwise. I think we should give Disney a chance to make none musicals. You never know, the future ones may become blockbusters

reply

I agree with you. I wasn't giving my opinion but more my 'analysis' of why some of the Disney animated films struggled at the box-office, and it does appear that the musicals do better.

Very true.

Home Alone is overrated? According to your opinion? Hardly proof that a film is actually overrated.

reply

Your post is ridiculous. "Overrated" is always opinion—nothing is actually overrated.

That's exactly my point dumbass. Geez, I hate stupid people who think they are smart. Please, next time don't reply if you are going to say more stupid sh**. You can either stop replying or start thinking before saying something.

Home Alone is awesome. Hater!

"Home Alone" is a possible reason, as well as "Die Hard 2", "Tremors", "Dick Tracey", and "Arachnaphobia" (all of which came out the same year).

Marz Barz, I think in all honesty, nobody really knows why films are hits or flops. It certainly has nothing to do with the quality of a film. This one was excellent and clearly should have had a large audience.

You know billionaire Richard Bramson (of all the Virgin enterprises--Virgin Records, Virgin AIrlines, etc.), I remember reading in his autobiography that he attempted to duplicate his huge success in the music industry by getting into making films, too, but it didn't work for him. He got out of it pretty quickly, and said that with music, it is pretty clear when a song or album is going to be a hit or not, so you don't risk much by signing a group and recording them. But with movies, there is just no telling. Great movies can flop and terrible movies can become huge hits. Bramson was wise to get out and make billions on things that were more controllable.

Home Alone, killed this movie at the U.S Box office. Loads of movies Predator 2, Rocky V, Three Men and a little lady. All were box office flops.

Competition from Home Alone, and some parents may have felt it was too intense for their children and if parents don't feel comfortable taking their children to see it that removes a huge demographic.
