Was anyone else creeped out/disturbed by Joan Cusack?

A 30 yo woman seducing a 16 yo boy into a relationship. She was sweet and had good intentions but Cusack portrayed her as a lonely woman and she came off as a little 'simple' (possible disability). They really normalised this relationship however if the sexes were reversed it wouldn't have gotten the same treatment. It was just a little unsettling especially with her picking him up from school and all...

Blanchett / Bullock / Exarchopoulos / Thompson / Winslet

Not at all. Actually, he was older than 16; 17 or 18, I think. I thought she was the best thing in the film.

I agree, she weirded me out, too. Plus I felt she was condescending to just about everyone she spoke to in the movie. Also, Cusack's affected speech/speech impediment (whatever you want to call it) is annoying as sh!t. It detracts from any character she plays.

reply

Yeah I was confused and weirded out by this. I kept trying to tell myself maybe she was a 17-year-old volunteer at the hospital or something but then was like...nope, she has her own apartment, obvs has to be older than 18... what the heck. And he just SEEMED a lot younger and less mature than her too.

She's far creepier in "Arlington Road" - but yes, she has a thing about boys. Oh well, that's the way life is. But if the kid is okay with it, who cares? All these people that think that kids don't know what's going on are ignorant.

reply

Agreed, she was creepy. Also, anyone who disrespects a mother like Cusack's character did isn't good.

reply

She's great in Shameless.

How about her first movie - My Bodyguard.
