NOT A FAMILY MOVIE

I think some people get the wrong impression that this movie along with the companion movie, My Mother's Castle, are family films. That's a big mistake. They are definitely not family movies. They're intended strictly for grown ups. Children would find the movies extremely boring. I can't imagine any child enjoying these movies. The subtle charm of the movies is over the heads of children. Don't get me wrong. MFG and MMC are my two favorite movies but be warned that they're not good for children.

I disagree. I think they're great for children. Mine enjoyed it and after seeing it one of them decided to read the book upon which these two films are based. Films such as these two aren't boring to children who've been exposed to quality films.

I was a young boy (~8yo) when I first saw these movies and I remember I loved them both... And I still do today ! Along with other French movies (such as Diabolo menthe, La baule-les-pins, L'effrontée, La vie est un long fleuve tranquille), La gloire de mon père and Le château de ma mère made deep impressions on me as a child and I still feel very nostalgic about it.

I do hate to tell you, but your judgement is the opposite of what I have obtained in my classes, (I am a teacher). All the kids loved it, felt free to talk about it and asked for more! In my 4th level, we translated part of the book and I got the same response. This is a film for kids, as it gives something different to think about, and yet something to relate to for those kids in my classes.

Well I was also 8 the first time I saw it in the cinema (In 1989) with my older brother and sister and let me tell you that I adored it! ...

reply

First time I watched it, I was around 8 years old, and I liked it...
It's a movie that please both kids and adults... And I had read the books before to see the movie. You're view is just biaised by your adult vision. You just like it different at 10 or at 20 that's all.

First time I saw this movie, I was 11 or 12 and loved it.

Remnant_Of_The_Abyss, in Hong Kong many people have more than one given name and very often one of them is European.

reply

reply
