THE BLACK WIDOW???

Anybody ever notice the obvious simularities between the comic book character "The Black Widow" russian spy, with a shady villianesque past, in tight black leather suit and the character of Jasmine in the television movie "The Death Of The Incredible Hulk"? My guess is 10/1 The Black Widow was in the original script but they couldn't clear the rights in time. Anybody have any thoughts or information on this?

reply

Absolutely. I've been saying most of this for years, although I don't think clearing the rights was the problem, and even the backstories are so similar that I can't give coincidence any credence. See a particularly long posting at the end of the thread "Jack McGee's absence understandable" for details of all the evidence that I picked up on, and my speculations. You'll also find the details of the updates of my research summarized at the bottom of that post on "Iron Man appearance." You seem to be the only other person to have picked up on it, however. Makes me feel better, so thanks.

I too have been saying for years that Jasmine is a Black Widow inspired character. Glad to see I'm not the only one.

I've no wish to spend my remaining years grieving for the loss of old friends or their sons.

I don't know about rights issues, but the template is definitely there. I always felt so, as the other two movies were pilots for new characters. However, given the failure to launch new series, I suspected they tried to downplay the connection to a new Marvel character, in case it failed to launch a new series. Actually, a Black Widow series could have done well, since you wouldn't need that heavy an fx budget.

I always felt like they broke the guest-star momentum by not at least naming her as such. I guess they were too hung up on the failed idea to include She-Hulk and/or Iron Man.

I'm the best there is at what I do, and that ain't pretty.

So now we move on to the character Jasmin. There was something about her that kind-of stuck out at me. I mean, where else has there been a female Russian-esque secret spy with short hair, a black bodysuit, and has turned from her group and works for the forces of good? Sounds familiar, right?

So here’s my theory: She-Hulk was planned to guest star in DotIH. That fell through when NBC saw the pre-production stills of Nielsen in her costume. The script was rewritten with the Black Widow as the co-star. Bixby then found out he had prostate cancer, and decided that this will be his last Hulk film. The writers quickly changed the name of Widow to Jasmin in order to make Hulk the only Marvel hero and the main focus of the movie, since it was the last one.
