Why didn't he just....

When DWW is captured why didn't he just lie to the soldiers and tell them he was kidnapped by indians and held captive and was forced to dress like that. His story would be believable especially since the soldiers were out to retrieve white captives held in raids. Then when they released him he would escape and return to the sioux.

The army would probably want to move to attack the Indians that did it, he'd be setting his friends up for attack.

I really doubt they'd believe that. I doubt too many large, healthy, white soldiers were kidnapped by Indians. What would be the point. A large healthy male, in the absence of an apparatus to control them, would be more a danger than an asset. Vast majority of the captives they'd be looking for would be women (as wives) and children (as servants). Much easier for the Indians to control, as they are weaker and more docile. Easier to cultivate as a useful slave.

They knew he was a soldier. They knew what he looked like. Such a lie would not have been believable.

Or just changed his god damn clothes and then when he met up with them he could have totally lied and led them straight north saying that's where they were and let the Sioux get away.

I mean the guy left a feather in his head for gods sake.

DWW at that moment had no ties to the Army or white community, since there was " nothing for him there anymore " at the soldier fort. He was disgusted by them, his new persona came out
