My Fathers Glory VS My Mothers Castle

Which one did you like best? My favorite is the first one but the sequel is almost just as good. The only reason I like the first one more, is because the second one is so sad...

reply

definantly the first one. The plot was more interesting.

I think the first was the best, but the second one was not bad. The second one was not as interesting as the first one and it was so sad too. But they are still both great movies.

The sadness of the second one never fails to bring tears to my eyes (for nostalgia's sake, I watch that final clip quite often, starting with that last dinner outside with Bouzique, Lili, and everybody) I really don't separate the two films, but consider them as once piece together. Therefore, I love them both as one.

reply

I agree. I consider the two movies to be one long movie that had to be split in two.

I liked the first significantly more, but I definitely liked both. I think 1 had a stronger beginning and a slightly weaker ending (I just mean in comparison to how good the rest of it was). But I felt 2 had a much weaker beginning, but got really good once it picked up (about at the point where they are sneaking across properties through the canal doors).

Either way, both are definitely worth seeing, and I enjoyed them a lot. My Father's Glory is the only one I'd put in my All Time Top 200 though--it just felt a lot more magical and fun, and seemed to create the concept of nostalgia much better.

I'm going against the grain here, and I'm going to say that I liked Le Chateau better. I found it more whimsical and was a far more interesting plot, albeit very poignant at the end. I wouldn't exactly call this a sad story however, it's just life!

"La gloire" made me crazy it was so slow to start. Perhaps I was just a bit letdown with it, expecting more, having just watched Jean de Florette and Manon des sources recently. If you want to see Marcel Pagnol at his best, these later works are even more brilliant.

There was only one flaw in this film that I could detect. I think the film should have been about 15 minutes longer, and there should have been more adventure in the hills between Marcel and Lili. I love the interplay between Marcel and Isabelle, but I think too much focus was spent on this relationship, and it wound up overpowering Marcel's true childhood friendship with Lili. This all could have been rectified with an added 15 minutes or so.

This film has some very profound insights on life. My favorite line from the movie is

"Such is the life of a man. Moments of joy, obliterated by unforgettable sadness. There's no need to tell the children that."

A near masterpiece, I rate this at 9/10. I give La gloire de mon Pere 8/10.

I agree with many poster on here , it his one film that was split in two , so I like both of them equally.Yes , the ending is sad but in my opinion it is one of the most beautiful ending of any films I have seen , it's gut wrenching and it really show the love Marcel had for his mother.

reply

I love both, but I prefer My Fathers Glory.

They are both masterpieces. La Gloire de Mon Père resonates more with my old childhood, but Le Château de Ma Mère has breathtaking moments (not to mention the ending).

10/10 to both.

I really think the two movies form a diptych, so it's kind of impossible to choose. The second one did have a devastating ending, of course.😢
