Do you know someone like Hyacinth?

Oh my. I know someone who is so much like Hyacinth – my father!

If your answer to this thread is yes: Were you able to enjoy this show or did you cringe at the similarities between your own real-life Hyacinth and the character?

I love this show and wish the series went on longer, but a few instances were so familiar to me that I felt uncomfortably annoyed at not only Hyacinth but her husband for humoring her to no end.

I definitely know a Hyacinth.

My aunt (mothers sister) is like a Hyacinth on steroids. Appearances are everything to her. When I know I have to spend time with her I will literally be physically ill from the stress of it. You have to watch what you say, what you do and how you act when you're around her or you will be even more miserable.

I can't watch this show without thinking of my aunt and seeing so many of her behaviors in Hyacinth.

reply

Yes I do, my Aunt is just like this, however she doesn't realise she is a Hyacinth and the whole of her neighbourhood call her it. She calls other women it ironically.

We believe it may be based on her as one of our family members worked in production at the BBC when this was produced!

The thing is she is more sinister and controlling, so in real life it isn't so funny, although the odd situations are still funny.
She used to make her husband out M&S bags in the car and put Aldi shopping in them, all because if the neighbours though, she didn't care apparently but they would (eye-roll)!!

She lies to make everything better then it is and can be quite sinister, if she has been particularly vile and insulting I find it very hard to watch this as she reminds me too much of her.

I come from a working class London Irish background and have a couple of Aunts through either the good fortune of their husbands or children have climbed the social ladder and as a result come across as cosseted and delusional like Hyacinth.

reply

I know/knew several people who are/were like Hyacinth Bucket.

My dad was like Hyacinth in the sense that he was pushy and knew everything.

My aunt is like Hyacinth in that she tries to keep up appearances that she is better than she really is.

I've known a few people like Hyacinth. The most notable one, or the one who I stupidly got the closest to, was an ex-boyfriend. I could fill this whole post up with the Hyacinth-like things he did (and still does). He is truly the male version of her - he has delusions of being talented (in his case, he thinks he's master comedian who possesses the quick wit of Dorothy Parker), he brags about odd things like his 10+ year old Honda Prelude with a "custom factory paint job" and the biggie - he's totally working class but thinks he's some upper class guy who has just been slumming for the last 20+ years. He actually said that once!

I'm still able to enjoy the show though mainly because Hyacinth is truly funny whereas my ex ain't. Plus, his life is utter crap now.

No, but i wish i did. she is hilarious. Coukd never understand why people were frightened of her. I would have loved to be invited to one of her candlelight suppers, it woukd have been a scream.

Sometimes when I watch I get an uncomfortable feeling that I am a bit hyacinth myself. I often scold my (beloved) hubby for being gross in public. (Like when he cleans his teeth in the grocery store - using those flossing things - not a toothpick!) but then I remind myself that I don't care about being better than everyone else, I really care about others so I give myself a break lol.

Like I said in another topic:

I have a Hyacinth as a neighbour. My husband and I often say we are like Elizabeth and Emmet. If we are going out, we look to see if she's outside. If she is, and we can wait, then we do. We are not afraid of her, it's just that when she "catches" us, there's really NO escaping! I usually complain to my husband that the conversation ends when she wants it to end. We have tried everything. I say I have to go back to work (I work from home), that I have something in the oven, but she just keeps talking. The only thing that works is if my phone rings, so sometimes when I see her coming or when she knocks on my door, I set a timer and when it ends she thinks my phone is ringing lol!

Bonus: the other day we were talking and I happened to mention something about a neighbour down the street (regarding garbage collection - I never talk about other people with her because she's so gossipy). Anyway, when I said "You know Mrs. X, down the street" and then she said... I kid you not... "THE ONE WITH THE MERCEDES?" Needless to say my husband and I had a fit of laughter that night when I told him what "our Hyacinth" had said!

The funny thing is her husband is the quiet type, much like Richard, and we don't see him much. He also appears to be a little impatient with her antics. And her son lives across the street and is very rude to her. The difference is that she doesn't try to be sophisticated or anything like that. She is somewhat devoid of class.

I have a sister who is a fan of the show and has some Hyacinth-like traits. Like if she knows someone famous, rich or distinguished she will talk about knowing that person with excitement and with bright eyes and a big smile, as if it's an advantage to know such person. Much like Hyacinth does. I love my sister and I feel for her because really it makes her look like a simpleton.

And in some other aspects Hyacinth reminds me of my mother in law (I know, my life is a sitcom). Mainly the way she will make a fuss about things. But none of these things stops me from enjoying the show. We laugh when we see similarities with our neighbour. There's another sitcom charachter that reminds me of my mother in law, it's Marie Barone from Everybody Loves Raymond. She is so much like my MIL that I couldn't enjoy the show anymore and had to stop watching as it wasn't really funny anymore for me, so I totally understand where you're coming from!

reply

The one time I think Marie and Hyacinth were a direct hit was in the episode of ELR when the Barones were kicked out of their retirement village and they were explaining how Marie was treating the other residents with her overbearing, condececnding control freakness (even down to her part in the "Unsinkable Molly Brown" which became a one woman show), they were two peas in a pod. Although Marie had a nasty streak, Hyacinth didn't think of harming anybody, it's just that her way was right. Loved both shows.

My Dad compares my sister to Hyacinth.

My late mother-in-law was something like Hyacinth. She never listened but heard what she wanted to hear and saw what she wanted to see.
