You can't help but feel sorry for Uncle Phil

From the beginning of the series people would constantly crack jokes about his weight and even after he had a heart attack he was still the butt of many fat jokes almost as if that episode never happened, I mean come on now show the poor man a little sensitivity

reply

Then he shouldn't have gotten fat, it's not that hard to figure out.

reply

That's easier said than done.. I don't think anyone really plans on being fat, but may realize one day that they're bigger than they'd like to be.

reply

Yeah well, I felt sorry for Will when Uncle Phil told him he couldn't wear his clothes and hair at the party with that Whitey guy.

Excuse me, but have you ever been in that situation yourself? Have you got any idea how hard it is? It's not like anybody wants to become overweight, but a few of us still end up that way. Even stopping yourself from gaining even more weight can be tough.

It especially is if you haven't been to the gym in 20 years, avoid working out at any opportunity, and continually stuff yourself on everything within arm's reach for 30 years, which is exactly what Philip did.

reply

I think you need to get off your high horses. You have no idea what Philip did or didn't do. He might have tried to lose weight many times, as far as we know. But it really is hard for some of us to suddenly start working out and going on a diet.

reply

Yes we do, because his whole family attested to it, Vivian said herself he hadn't been to the gym since the 70s, who's going to know that better than the woman married to him for 25 years and knows his every move?

You get off YOUR high horse, Philip's character was a fat, indolent, lazy, gluttonous slob.

I know thats right. I wasn't born a size 2 the biggest size I ever wore was 20 almost size 22 size pants and I was in elementry/middle school. According to my family I'm just big boned because I'm not obese like in the 400lbs. Then before I went to high school I decided to loose weight but I did it the wrong way I starved myself I wouldn't eat anything breakfast or for lunch and I would eat dinner and go to the gym and do the same thing the next day. In 2000 I did gain some weight back. I lost weight in 2009 so I could go into the military and this late last year and earlier this year I gained my weight back. I was going through things but now I'm trying to get my weight down and this time keep it off but it is tough.

reply

Sure it's tough, but Philip never even tried, and as rich as he was he had every opportunity at his fingertips, with his money he could get a home gym, get a personal trainer, try every fad weight loss trend available to the rich and famous, whatever, but no, all he cared about was inhaling as much food as was in his vicinity.

reply

The bottom line is obesity can KILL you so you should take the steps necessary to lose weight or it could kill you which is exactly what happened!

Excerpt from Novastar's review of "Here Comes Honey Boo Boo"

Here Comes Honey Boo Boo is the first reality TV show to be about REAL people, instead of being about a bunch of celebrities living together or a bunch of beach people with 'the perfect bodies' living together, or about a family with 20 kids, or rebellious teenagers running the house, we get a look at a real family in their everyday life and see them just being themselves. They're loud and obnoxious and a bit uncouth, they are a FAT sassy happy family and that's what we need more of. Looks should not be allowed to deceive because once you actually watch a few episodes you realize just how 'normal' they are and realize they're actually MORE normal and functional than most picture perfect 'normal' families.

All of a sudden you have a problem with fat people? 

reply

He may have been fat burhe was far far far from being a slob he's a man who worked hard his whole life and he had earned his comfortable life so get off your high horse.

reply

No offense but, being a former fatass with a full-time job and not a lot of free time. It took me but a few months to get into the groove of healthy eating and working out.

It's hard, but if you want to do it... you'll do it.

Don't get me wrong, I am extremely sympathetic and sad that James Avery is no longer with us. And there is some chance that it may be harder for some than others but there's really no way of knowing that(except for maybe specific or extreme situations)

OK let's remember we're talking about a fictional character here. I don't know about the actors struggles but Uncle Phil and people in reality alike him are a different story. I've been there myself and I never asked to be passed any apology. Yes it's difficult to go to the gym because it's discouraging to only manage five minutes on a treadmill and then give up but in all fairness dieting is not nearly as difficult.

Phil was a glutton full stop. He seemed to have no motivation to change his habits whatsoever, even after his heart attack! He was going to be 'a lean, mean, Judicial machine', but that proved untrue. Even if it was a psychological issue there are lots of programs out there to help deal with it. In fact he actually seemed content in his obesity. At no point do we see any evidence to prove his compulsive eating was as a result of depression, thyroid or any other condition. He could have afforded the best detox clinics, counselors, personal trainers etc but he didn't even try.

I've had a lot of sobering thoughts in my time Del Boy, it's them that started me drinking!

Do you know how much bull**** you managed to put into one single post? Please get off your high horses and stop spreading prejudices and ignorance.

reply

Do you realise how much of an ass you are? I'm an alcoholic, a compulsive drinker. I can't cure it! I hate going to AA meetings because I'm also agoraphobic but I haul my ass in there to stay sober. So don't give me crap about eaters, I have a sister in denial. If you want to use every excuse in the book to justify the fact that you're a fat glutton then keep it to yourself and don't take it out on me. I stopped drinking booze, STOP EATING FOOD YOU FAT SLOB!!!
You're like every addict in existence. It's everyone else's fault except yours. 'They don't understand me boo hoo'! Guess what sweetheart you'll be the only one dying on that hospital bed from heart disease and all the people you chose to blame for your own stupidity will not miss you one iota!!!

I've had a lot of sobering thoughts in my time Del Boy, it's them that started me drinking!

reply

I am an ass? Excuse me, but I'm not the one, who calls other people "fat slobs". And you whole post just further proves how ignorant and prejudiced you are. Alcoholism is also a bit different from being overweight. You do not need to drink alcohol to survive, but you need to eat food. And if you can stay away from bars and licor stores, you will most likely not be tempted. But as for food, it's everywhere. And even sugar seems to be everywhere, which is not easy for me, as I have diabetes. Do you have any idea how awful it is to be the only one at your job, who has to stop yourself from buying an ice-cream along with the others? I do as good as I can, and you have no right to insult other people or belittle their problems.

Intelligence and purity.

reply

You don't get to buy ice cream like your co-workers. Wow. You are SO oppressed.

reply

I'm not the one, who calls other people "fat slobs
No you just consider their opinion bull****, prejudice and ignorant. It's you who provoked and it's you who slung the first mud!
And if you can stay away from bars and licor stores, you will most likely not be tempted.
That's the most uneducated incorrect statement I've ever read on IMDb. Alcoholics don't drink because it's right in front of them it's because they have a disease. Any time I've fallen off the wagon I've been nowhere near alcohol. Not to mention the fact that alcohol is available in virtually every grocery store, restaurant, bowling alley, movie theatre. So no it's not as avoidable as you claim.

And don't give me this 'need food to survive' nonsense! Just more excuses. Yes you need food to survive three square meals a day. You don't need umpteen bags of chips, candy bars, cookies, doughnuts, litres of cola...etc. Eating food to survive and compulsive gluttony are not the same. Over eaters have an affliction which like alcoholism and drug abuse can be treated if the afflicted wants to get better! Uncle Phil with all his wealth, and especially after his heart attack, could and should have checked himself into rehab. He could and should have attended support meetings. He could and should have entered counselling if that's what it took. He did none of that! He continued a lifestyle detrimental to his own health and selfish to his own family to whom he made a promise to change!

So please once again don't give me your excuses, but for what it's worth I apologise for calling you a fat slob. I had actually been drinking but I repeat to call me, ignorant and prejudiced for giving my 'bull***' opinion just because you have your own personal struggles is immature. If you're doing to dip your foot into a pool of piranhas don't start crying when you lose a toe! Actually I think I'll make that my new signature!

Hey! You're not old enough to drink! Now go and die for your country!!!

reply

It's awesome you are fighting the temptations of giving into favorite foods and such to get at a certain weight but you talk about alcoholism as if it is easy to stop, avoiding the passing of liquor stores and bars are not enough for some people, for heavy alcoholics it's also a psychological issue as the need for a drink is constantly on their mind and the temptation is indeed as strong as ever so that comment you made about liquor stores and bars as the only form of temptation was rather ignorant.

reply

Fair enough. If I hurt someone with that comment, I apologize. My experience with alcoholism is kind of limited, so I don't have the whole picture of which temptations you can find out there. So yeah, I guess I made a mistake there. And you can't buy alcoholic drinks in general grocery stores here in Sweden, except for a few kind of canned beers (and they will not be the strongest kinds). And I have never seen alcohol being sold at a movie theater, or even at many restaurants in my town. So I forgot that many other countries will have a more liberal view on selling alcohol, which would be another reason why I said what I did.

But a few other posters in this thread have been equally ignorant about my problems. Calling me a "fat slob" and mocking my battle with diabetes is just as hurtful. But I guess that they are skinny people, who are lucky enough to go through life without having my problems (even if they might have a different set of problems, that I don't have). They simply can't understand my struggle, just as little as I as a teetotaler can fully get the stuggle of an alcoholic. At least you managed to be polite about this, so I must applaud you for that.

reply

Wow...logic and reason are BS and prejudice to you? You really are deluded. You must be one of those people who think that the obesity epidemic is made up by corporations.

reply

I agree with you completely. You didn't even say anything offensive. Some people will go to great lengths to remain victims.

reply

I used to weigh 225lbs. I now weigh 173. It has been that way for a year. I kept the weight off it will be 3 years this year. I can realize how hard it is.

Was it ever made public what the open-heart surgery was for...just because you are overweight does not mean you will have open heart surgery. 

reply

Oh please! Uncle Phil was no "day at the beach" himself. He was a phony, up-tight snob not to mention a condescending jackass who seemed to get pleasure out of torturing Will all the time. Pretty much everything he did just irked me(just like Moesha's dad), even the smug look he gave sometimes. Remember the episode "Save The Last Trance For Me" when he was trying to get Nicky into some bourgie preschool. Like, it's preschool for goodness sake! Can't he just go to a regular preschool?! The part that really bugged me was when someone from the school came to the house and they had all these props such as a bass or cello which was most likely rented for the day. Also they had all of the stupid books that they've most likely never even read. Even aunt Viv had an issue with that. She said "I really don't like the idea of pretending to be something we're not" or something to that effect.

I also hate the fact he seemed to put the blame on Will every time his kids did something wrong. I could understand when he first arrived(after maybe the first 6 episodes) and they were adjusting to him being but uncle Phil did througgout the whole entire series. Like, dude your children knew better by the second season. The only episode where I do think that Will was partly responsible was when Carlton overdosed because he directed Carlton to his locker where the pills were. It was also Carlton fault because he has no business taking pills where he wasn't even sure what the hell he was taking. So no I don't feel sorry for him.

reply

Good point Earth. Phil has done some crazy things and put on a show that irked me to the tee. Like in Season 1 where Phil is being to be interviewed or something and Will gave the people some information about when Phil was a kid and on the farm. Phil acted like he was so ashamed of his past and then in other episodes he contradicts himself and say how he isn't ashame of his past. Anyways, I'm glad Phil mom got on him about being ashame of his past. I agree about the episode with Nicky going to preschool, he let Ashley go to regular school why not let Nicky start out with regular school its not gonna hurt him at least he won't grow up to be spoiled like Carlton and Hillary.

If I was Will and was sent to live with family and an Uncle that blames me for everything I would be ready to move back to Philly.

reply

Thank you!!! Uncle claimed that he wanted Nicky to have the best education. Like, it's only preschool! Calm down! What makes him think that Nicky couldn't get just as good of an education at Cal U?! I mean, what college is gonna care which preschool you went to?! It's not that serious! My child doesn't need to go to that damn college if they're gonna judge you based on where you went to preschool. That's ridiculous!

reply

What makes him think that Nicky couldn't get just as good of an education at Cal U?!
When it comes to the world of big business it's status not education.

The guy who got his business degree from Harvard is always going to get the job ahead of the guy who got his at Cal U. It's the good old British class system alive and kicking in modern America.

As for Nicky's fancy pre-school it's the exact same thing if you mean to end up in an Ivy League college you start as you mean to go on.

If you dip your foot into a pool of piranhas don't cry when you lose a toe!😞🐟

reply

Phil didn't let Ashley go to a regular school. There was one episode where Phil had her enrolled at an expensive private school, but Ashley went behind his back and attended public school instead. Problems arose when her teacher wanted to meet her father, so Ashley enlisted Will's help to pretend to be her father.

reply

The jokes were mean but Phil needed to lose weight and he never put in the effort. Even after suffering a heart attack brought on by problems from being overweight, he didn't try! Even after a doctor came and told him his blood pressure and cholesterol were too high and that he needed to lose weight for his health, he dismissed the comments and said he was still in great shape. The man was in denial.

Carleton was short Phil was fat Hillary was dumb Jeff was a butler
