This show aired in the 80's

Can anyone tell me why IMDB lists this show as debuting on HBO in 1990? Amazon also says 1990. This is incorrect. Dream On started airing on HBO around 1988, maybe early 89 when I was living out west at the time attending college. My roommate and I were the only ones in our group of friends with cable and we usually had a large crowd over every week to watch Martin Tupper and the endless parade of bare boobs.

I know who my friends were in 1988 and 89 and I know we watched this show every week until January 1990 when I moved back east and never saw the show again. Doe anyone else remember watching before 1990?

reply

After reading this whole thread and seeing all the evidence .. I still have to throw my lot in with the 1989 crowd .. I moved out of my parents house in March of 1990 .. I didnt even have cable in my first house and I distinctly remmeber watching and loving this show when I still lived at home..

reply

Well you genii are discounting the fact that the show was probably shot in the 80s, 1989; A year which a pilot could have aired.Hence, people who saw the pilot episode in 1989 would think that the show started in 1989 and they'd be right. The show probably wasn't picked up for wider release until july 1990, which explains the reviews from the periodicals. As per custom, Print media doesn't review pilots because some never get picked up. So, what have we learned? Both camp are correct as to the start date through empirical and technical evidence. If you saw it in 1989 then it started at that point for you, but for the vast majority of people and according to production etiquette it started in 1990.But seeing as nothing exists in a vacuum and strong evidence that this show started shooting in the 80s I say it started in the 80s.

reply

No way.

Can you share this "strong evidence" that the show aired in the 1980s?

Not one person has produced even one tiny shred of empirical evidence that this show aired (not taped, but aired) at any time before July of 1990. That includes the pilot episode.

Get the DVD, watch the first episode, look at the date in the credits. Case closed. Oh wait, if you do that and see 1990 then you'll claim, "There's a strong probablility (based on nothing) that this show was aired in 1989, then re-edited and shown again in 1990 and someone went in and changed the production date in the end credits, therefore this show aired in 1989 because I say so and Dan Brown is the greatest historian ever".

reply

Damn it, can't we all just agree that this show is awesome and it is what made Sex and the City possible? If you want to know why men like me love Sex and the City you have to cite this show as a major influence.

reply

And that means the show aired in the 1980s...??

I'll ask you - Can't we all agree this show never aired in the 1980s? I've cited substantial, contemporary evidence showing this. No one else has anything but half-baked memories, and that's what this thread is about - it's not about allowing you to still feel masculine while being a fan of what most people see as a "chick show" ("Sex and the City") by citing "Dream On". So don't try to chaneg the subject.

If you can't offer any proof that this show aired in the 1980s then go watch "The View" and cry over how beautiful horses are.

reply

I am a man if a oonfess to strangling a gargle of kittens while watching Sex and the City? Please, both shows are extremely similar and I have no shame in announcing that I like Sex and the City.

reply

And "Dream On" still never aired in the 1980s, so stop trying to change the subject.

reply

The dates on the DVD are DVD production dates. I lived in Massachusetts until 01/01/1988, and I distinctly remember watching this show lying on the floor next to my wood burning stove. I moved to San Diego in 88, so I KNOW that stove wasn't here! Without a doubt, it aired in the late 80's.

Do whatcha have to, to do whatcha want to.

reply

The dates at the end of an episode are not of the DVD production. DVDs were not marketed until 1997, and you can find many, many DVDs of films and tv shows that have a year pre-dating 1997 in the credits.

lastcall42 - If you can prove to me that this show aired in 1987 (or earlier), then I will pay you $1,000. This is not a joke. If you can't prove it, then admit that your memories are wrong.

reply

Torreydeluca: I agree with you that it aired in the 1990s. But what is more important and what I'd like to ask everybody paying attention is this: "HOW CAN I GET THE LAST FOUR SEASONS of the show??!!!" :)

reply

I couldn't possibly read all the posts, so if there's been a consensus forgive me...but Thank you so much for starting this thread! I thought I was crazy because I have NO DOUBT this show was on in the 80s. It seems to have been forgotten; it was one of the early HBO 1/2 hour comedies that really took off (in fact, I don't think this started more than a couple years after 1st and Ten started...in fact I think they overlapped)...anyway, if anybody comes up with anything concrete proving this was on in the 80s, and what the actual first air date was, I'd love to know...

reply

The consensus view is that people have incorrect memories and won't admit it even when faced with proof.

No one will ever come up with anything concrete that this show aired in the 1980s, because it didn't.

reply

Yeah, maybe...whatever.

reply

I've offered it to someone before, and here it is again... I will pay $1,000 to the first person who has proof that this show aired during the 1980s. The offer stands.

reply

You're probably right...you're obviously expending a lot of mental energy on this one very minor point. It's really not that big a deal. It seemed to a bunch of people, myself included, that it aired in the 80s. You say it didn't and what proof there is is on your side. It might be time to move on

I'll bet you're a blast at parties

reply

It's worth my efforts if people will stop believing nonsense based on faulty memories, whether in this case or in general in their lives. The point is to not trust your memories.

As for you - Why do you have to resort to condescending statements of insult? And if you want to go that route, then as for your previous "whatever" comment and for this latest reply, you have the argumentative and social skills of a bitchy 14 year-old girl. I'm sure you get invited to tons of parties where everyone buzzes around you.

reply

It's just people being nostalgic...and when I saw a comment with someone having the same faulty perception that I had it struck a chord with me. In this case, the fact that there are a bunch of people who "remember" this show airing in the 80s, when it didn't, is infinitely more important - and interesting - than the actual facts. You probably can't see that though...right?

reply

I've already covered this is an earlier post. There is a pop-culture nostalgia for the 1980s as "the golden age" at this time among many people and this false memories fit into that.

In response to "You probably can't see that though...right?"

Hey - I can play condescending jackass, too!!!
I have a PhD from Harvard University. And you? I'd love to hear it.

reply

You've been playing "condescending jackass" the whole time (though I doubt any "playing" was going on) but this is the capper...thanks for slumming with us little people "professor" lol. I guess the $1000 was grant money from the university and the results of your study of "TV Watchers of The Golden Age of Pop Nostalgia With Faulty Memories" will be printed in the Crimson lol...

You and Cornel West can discuss the results while your cheering on the old alma mater vs. Yale this fall

reply

Yes, Cornel West and the President and I will root on the Crimson while you say "whatever!" while pouting over your second class mental status and trying to convince people that 1990 took place during 1987.

Don't worry - no one will ever mistake you for someone who was accepted at Harvard.

reply

"Desperation is a tender trap; It gets you every time" - Others have attended Ivy League schools; for all you know so did I (yes, that's right). I just don't feel the need to try to use such a meaningless status symbol to lord my perceived superiority over those on these boards (since I don't perceive myself as superior to anyone, and certainly not because I went to college. Like I said, "Whatever"). Unlike yourself; you've spoken down to the people on this thread since I came in. And if your need for acceptance and all your self-esteem comes down to a piece of paper you received for graduating from school (regardless of that school's status) you've got much bigger problems than correcting the "faulty memories" of us little people, "Doctor...Whomever"...Besides, I'd think such a high-minded individual and deep-thinker like yourself would have better things to do than watch TV or bicker on the internet...

reply

Dude - Everything you criticized torreydeluca of doing, you have done yourself in your own posts in this thread. But she/he posted proof that the show never aired in the 1980s. It's kind of frustrating to read this thread and see all the idiots refusing to suck it up and admit the show wasn't on in the 1980s. You kind of gave in by saying toerreydeluca is "probably" right, and then to protect your delicate ego you began blasting away with insults. Just go all the way and say you were wrong - which you could have seen without posting in the first place if you actually read the entire thread to begin with.

reply

Yes, Dude, you are so right...thank you for helping me - no, MAKING me - see the light, Dude...if I'd only read the thread carefully, acknowledging every last detail...the way that you did, Dude. Dude! Your perceptiveness humbles me.

Forever your Dude...

reply

Why are you so angry?

Look at what you typed? It's not even worth following your irate rants in this thread any longer. The fact of the matter is that I'm right in this case, and the show never aired in the 1980s. You'll probably reply with another personal attack to avoid that subject.

reply

Laaaaaame!!!! As they say, Sarcasm is the protest of the weak.

Grow up, force263.

reply

[deleted]

Well i just watched the 1st first episode of Dream on and it said 1990 at the end of the credits.

reply

Kudos to torreydeluca for actually researching periodicals of the time to prove this was a totally 1990s show.

The only contribution I'll make is based on my own memory. However, it's associated with a significant milestone in my life that leaves no doubt that this show never aired in the 1980s, at least to me.

See, I was born in the late 1970s. As such, my "biology" did not fully mature until the 1990s, and I remember quite distinctly remember "utilizing" the first season as it originally aired. Now, there is no doubt that my biology wasn't mature in the 1980s. That was too early. That event definitely occurred in 1990.

Memory is unreliable, but I think my memory is pretty solid on this point. More solid than someone else's memory concerning a stove in their house, that's for sure.

I think I've shared too much. The things I do for truth.

This fog is getting thicker!
And Leon's getting laaaaarrrrrger!

reply

Maybe its all those drugs all of you did in the 80's.

Religion is regarded by the common people as true, by the wise as false, and by rulers as useful.

reply

Holy crap this thread is like people arguing over whether the Simpsons technically started in 1989 or 1990 because only the pilot episode was made in 1989.

hell the time frame is pretty identical to this one :)

reply

People who originally watched this show have already grandchildren. People who were kids when this show aired have there own kids, still people argue when this show aired in thread which is almost decade old.
That kind of *beep* always on imdb.
