Okay, I'll bite. Why all the hate?

I was totally surprised at how much I really, genuinely enjoyed Star Trek V. And 5.3 is an absolutely absymal rating for a film that almost perfectly represents the whole mood of the original series.

Sure, the trilogy of films before it were better, but TFF certainly feels closer to what TOS was all about. The exploring, the brilliant character conflict, the Tongue-in-cheek humor. And the overall plot? Come on. Almost 1/3 of TOS' episodes deal with some sort of all-powerful, God-like creature!

Now let's move onto some scenes that instantly stand-out. the opening scenes with the crew on Shore leave are The "Stand Back" morse code scene was silly yet great. Kirk's fear of dying alone was an interesting character development. Then we have the scene were Sybok heals Spock's and Bones' "pain".. Only for Kirk to refuse the treatment, citing his "pain makes him who he is". Well that just has to be one of the most beautiful, and relatable scenes ever in Star Trek.

Maybe it's just because I'm currently in love with all-things Star Trek, But I found this to be a great film worth watching again. I gladly consider it a solid Star Trek film. 

I really like the scenes with Kirk, Spock, and McCoy in this movie. As many have said, it's reminiscent of the original series. I think the movie is underrated.

The ending is not fully satisfying, but I think the idea was for people to draw their own conclusions about the nature of the "god creature". This enabled people to put their own interpretation on it without having to offend anyone.

It's hated so much because diehard Trekkies are angry, embittered little nerds who take themselves and this franchise too seriously.

To explain--I went into this movie absolutely expecting the worst based on all the hatred. I couldn't believe how much I enjoyed it. Yes, the special effects sucked, but so what? This movie was the closest in tone to the original series and had so much heart to it. You could feel the affection and camaraderie amongst the crew.

As for the characterization, people complaining about everyone being out of character are being dense. Not only was the crew on shore leave (explaining their more relaxed attitude), they all acted exactly like a tight knit group of people who've been working together for decades, just more comfortable and not as uptight around each other. Plus, they were older and you know what? People change when they get older.

Don't get me wrong--I can understand people feeling disappointment over certain things, but hatred? How can people "hate" this film, which was so lighthearted and had positive themes like the importance of friendship and letting go of pain? Someone would have to be a real angry, cynical, bitter human being to hate this movie.
