Did Di Nardo...? (SPOILER ALERT)

The scene where Di Nardo inexplicably runs after the Vietnamese child to shield it from the VC leader who had no intention of harming the child, it appeared he got shot in the crotch. In essence, Di Nardo appeared to have been de-narded (I couldn't resist). Anyway, is that the reason why he told Hafner to kill him because he didn't want to go back home without his junk? Just trying to understand his pleas for Hafner to kill him and why Hafner obliged.
