I disagree. Other than a couple of scenes with people driving in cars, I don't think this movie even remotely resembles AG. AG was much more dark and gritty. Shag is all sunshine and fun. The faint line you might be trying to draw is that they are both "coming of age" style movies. But that would mean that these are the only 2 coming of age movies ever made in order to draw such a comparison. There are many films that have this type of theme and they don't have to compete. The great thing is that AG can have its fans and Shag can have its fans and sometimes they overlap and sometimes they don't. It's a free country.

They're both coming of age films set in the 60s. That's pretty much where the similarities end. Shag is a full on chick flick (which I generally despise) set in the South while American Graffiti is set in California and more of a dude/buddy film.

To even compare the two is moronic. I love Shag because I watched it so much as a pre-teen and it is charming but AG is probably better written and has better performances.

Your thinking is actually very ignorant... Being from Berkeley County SC and taking trips to Myrtle Beach with friends often, I can tell you it captured what Myrtle Beach is to a T from that era... even on into the 80's and 90's Myrtle Beach is exactly like it is shown in this movie with cars barely moving along the strip.

Too many feel "AG" has a monopoly on the 60s nostalgia flick genre. "Shag" is a worthy companion to it.

My people skills are fine. It's my tolerance of morons that needs work.

I don't see the comparison. I would compare it to other coming of age movies like "Where the Boys Are", and The Allnighter.

American Graffiti is depressing. I enjoyed it in the 70s but I don’t care for it anymore. it’s not a film I care to rewatch
