Why were they have their Christmas dinner on Xmas Eve?

We have always had it on Christmas Eve too. Followed by Midnight Mass, I assumed it was a Catholic tradition.

We always do a big dinner on Christmas Eve, prime rib then we open only 1 present and do Turkey on Christmas day and we dress up formal for our dinners, no sloppy jeans or sweatpants. Christmas morning we do our stokings thendo big breakfast then open the presents one person at a time going in a circle so we can all see peoples reactions to opening their gift. After that out of pajamas then dress up to celebrate the day.
