Every 4th episode of the mid-80's Twilight Zone re-boot seemed to deal in the fear of imminent death from Nuclear Armageddon.

Then, around 1989-90, this theme in movies/TV seemed to disappear as the fear of death from Nuclear Armageddon evaporated when the USSR economically imploded because they couldn't keep pace with Ronald Reagan's defense buildup (not that I'm bitter or anything that the late President doesn't get the credit he deserves for this amazing accomplishment).

The Quiet Earth (1985)

More than a few, but the one that lingers is Testament (1983): http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0086429/?ref_=fn_tt_tt_1.

Check out a BBC TV series from about the same time called Threads. I don't think that ever reached Stateside.

You need to see The Quiet Earth.

For an 80's movie that's grim yet poignant, I recommend Runaway Train with Jon Voigt and Eric Roberts. Apologies if its already been mentioned in this thread.

On the Beach

Even a man,who is pure of heart, and says his prayers by night...

If you're talking about the 'nuclear' theme, then definitely Threads and The Day After.

There have been a few like "Last Night" (though that one was a comedy), and maybe "Seeking a Friend for the End of the World".

The closest one would be One Night Stand (1984).

That said, Miracle Mile is pretty unique as the setting is pretty much "70 minutes before the nukes drop" and that it all starts happening at 4am. The whole ambience gives it a dream-like feel. It's also unique because most movies from that era would focus The Days Before, or The Day After... this one focuses on the 70 minutes immediately before the bomb.
