Turner & Hooch

Can somebody tell me why the film K-9 and Turner & Hooch, which where both shown in 1989, are almost identical? Lazy storywriters?

reply

Funnily enough, the two films both currently share a 5.6 score on IMDb.

Great observation on the 5.6 rating, which is still the same for both films.

I think dog films generally follow a similar story arc, and cop dog films even more so. At least Jerry Lee didn't die in this one. "Turner & Hooch" is a slightly better film, in my opinion; I gave that 7/10 Milk Bones, while "K-9" gets 6/10.

Of course we also had Tombstone and Wyatt Earp released fairly close together as well.

I met Daniel Petrie Jr. (screenwriter of TURNER & HOOCH) at the Austin Film Festival back in '07 and asked him about this. Long story short, Universal stole the idea and rushed the release of this movie knowing that Touchstone had a similar film in production. That's why Universal was sued, but the two studios settled out of court not allowing the suit to go to trial. TURNER & HOOCH is a vastly superior film.
