Anybody else love this movie?

I know its never going to win any awards or come top of the 'best film ever' list but its really cute and comforting and easy to watch. Is this anybody elses guilty pleasure?

reply

I like it too. Always gives me fond memories, as it came out my senior year in high school. I thought Selleck and Daniels played well off of each other. It is really hard to believe that Tom Selleck was nearly 44 years old when this was filmed. This is one of the few movies I have paid to see twice in one day. Maryland made an attractive and "not so typical shooting" location. It would be nice to see more movies like this in the theater today.

Popcornprincess16,

Not only that I love this movie but often use it as some sort of background for positive atmosphere. I'm not alone in this sentiment, for many of my friends considers the same remedy for good thoughts.

It has very charming atmosphere with very honest and likable flow.

Tom is very accessible and humble. Whatever you think or repeat after others… considering her requirements in this movie, I honestly think that Paulina was very honest and really supplied nice touch to already nice ensemble of actors. Movie is very, very relaxed.

It seems to me … this is one of those movies where nobody pursued of making some sensation, but rather truly a pleasant and funny experience. I like everything about this movie.

The crew, well chosen If I may say so, great atmosphere and taking location.

Believe it or not, just a few days ago while I was writing documents on my machine, Her Alibi was probably repeated twice on my screen. Just for that touch of good feeling.

There is nothing violent in this movie, and these days that is a rare virtue. Not even a slight sublimation of present movies. Greatest decade offered such movies.

Also, have you noticed that beautiful opening theme? Such profiled theme for relatively small project, just another proof of good collaboration.

Daniels and Selleck are so well matched together that one has a feeling they are really on daily basis every day.

You can collect biggest names in any movie, offer everything and yet there is no guarantee to accomplish such lovable results like found here in Her Alibi.

Thanks for the reply, its nice to know other people get the same feel good experiance from this movie as I do!

Volken - Do you know any other movies that have the same type of good calming atmosphere?

reply

Certainly,

Consider that I'm just about to enter the soft side (sleep) ...so will write what comes to my mind as perfect fit.

Many genres, and different things are triggering and communicating different states of what I call atmosphere for different people.

But I think you will love these.

I wont complicate with some European and French ones, because I doubt, you would find them easily.

(Many people don't understand this one. Not perfect cast, but again, great atmosphere. Don't mind that movie description, for it is benign and almost irrelevant. Covers barely the last three minutes of the movie.)

Thanks for the recommendations. Oddly enough I just bought 'Crazy People' on DVD but hadn't gotten round to watching it yet. I had never heard of it before but being a Dudley Moore fan thought I would give it a go. I've always found that '10' http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0078721/ has that same relaxing atmosphere.

reply

Good thinking :)

Very charming movie.

Speaking of '10' and Dudley...

Henry Mancini is my hero, and any movie graced with Mancini's music is safe bliss.

LOL

Nothing violent??

I liked this movie too, but someone was killed and there was a bombing and a fight scene. And people were chased by bad guys.

It's not as violent as other movies though, of course.

Yes! In fact, I came to this board to start a similar thread. I find it bizarre that just about every review I have seen for 'Her Alibi' has given it an average rating at best. Not only do I find the premise to be intriguing (living with a potential murderer and being the only thing in between her and freedom), but the gag throughout the movie of Philip embellishing incidents from his daily life and using them in his novel (especially hearing him recite the words as he types, using that tough-sounding narrative voice) is just priceless. Never seen it done in a movie before or since, and I think it is fantastically entertaining. They just don't make movies like this anymore. I'll never understand why this one gets trashed so often.

Oh, and by the way, the music is superb as well. Hope they release the score someday.

You know, I am a big Tom Selleck fan. And I liked this movie until I found out that Paulina Porizkova disliked Tom so much that she treated him like dirt. In fact, for the cover art, they had to use a different model and photoshopped her head on top since she didn't want to be touched by him. Tom, being the consummate professional that he is, never threw her under the bus about that. Since Porizkova ended up marrying Ric Ocasek (sp?), who is kind of 180 degrees from Tom Selleck, I am not surprised. Anyway, that little factoid ruined my pleasure in watching the movie. Sort of like trying to watch any of the Naked Gun movies with OJ Simpson.

reply

Where did you hear that?

reply

Regardless of the real deal between Paulina and Tom, this is still a great movie. Totally honest in it's intentions and such a feel good film. I'd love to live in a house like his and meet a stunning model when I'm 44...!!

reply

I'd settle for a stuido apt and plain jane to be 44 again. lol

I love this movie too, for all the sexual inuendo, and the to close to truths like "fear is part of any healthy relationship" "I love her...I'm terrified of her....sounds like a normal relationship" and "except what she didn't want him to know".

Mockery is the greatest form of flattery. Therefore it follows that comedies (romantic) are greatest flattery of life (love).

Man, dont know about the age bit but consider how many people get caught in a mess like poor Phillip. He has been in a rut for three years only to fall in love with a Romanian who is being charged with 1st degree murder. Not to mention when he brings her home she displays a series of abilities that would scare any sane man. Knife throwing, balancing beam, finesse with a bow and arrow and a remarkable ability to drive without getting a ticket. This is definitely one of my favorite movies.

reply

Davesprinkle,

Thanks for your note. To tell you the truth no ugly data about Paulina would pushed me away from this movie. And it is safe to say , this wont upset my yearly routine of watching Her Alibi again every year.

Nevertheless sad to hear about this. That means that Tom might not treasure this movie like we do.
Do you have any more data (some links perhaps) about this darker side Paulina presented with our Tom?

reply

If true she must be crazy. How could someone hate Tom Selleck?? LOL

reply

I'll take your word for it, but I think it's odd that she would do the kissing scenes and the haircut scene with him, but then not want to pose for the cover photo with him :-/

reply

Yeah, that's what I was thinking.

Wow, these posts are really old I'm replying to. Feels weird lol.

Is it just me, or is the last book cover at the end of the movie her and a black guy? My brother and I cracked up because we recalled him narrating about his "sinewy skin" and his "african bodyguard." We just thought it was hilarious that Tom's character would want to portray a character he portrayed himself after (make sense?) a totally different race because it's like an unspoken desire.

Good fun.

I loved this movie. The scene I enjoyed the most was the one where the neighbor came over to tell the dinner guests returning from the hospital that the cat had been electricuted.

Yes! I love this film and have since the first time I saw it...oh something like 100 time ago (at least!).

I thought it was a brilliant treatment; a little out of the norm by Hollywood standards, yet that's why I really liked it.

There were not too many flaws in this film, but the narrative structure--Swift's account versus Phil Blackwell's account is absolutely hilarious!

"Swift, pours himself a bourbon..." while he's really making chocolate milk throught he entire movie I thought was brilliant.

~~IMPORTANT FOR ME~~

Does anyone know where--primarily the country scenes--were shot? I know that the database says Baltimore, Maryland; however, that was perhaps real hasty.

Between Blackwell's house and where his brother lived--old colonial, dinner party are not Baltimore. Also, any one other than me notice the amount of sweating on all the actors? More N. or S. Carolina-ish to me. Cheers!

This movie is so funny. I love it.

reply

I don't really remember the story too well but I saw it in a Munich cinema when it came out in Germany and really enjoyed it. Plus I think Paulina Porizkova is one of the few talented models when it comes to acting. Never understood the nasty comments on her. She acted quite well and looked great. Tom Sellek too was a joy to watch, never afraid to make fun of himself.

reply

great movie! nothing guilty about it. case dismissed!

"Rue the day?" Who talks like that?

Yeah, I've always loved this movie. And Paulina is so beautiful! Especially the accent.
