I'd have to say its a tie for me. I like both films about the same, although, the first one does have a better story. The 2nd one was always fun to watch because of the religious antics that go on, its a funny film.
WTF?!?! Fletch Lives sucks. Chevy seems tired and bored in it. Nothing like his fast-talking quick witted character from the first movie.
The gags come WAY faster and more frequently in the original.
Something happened to Chevy from this movie onwards - he always seemed tired and less quick-fire from this movie onwards.
The original Fletch and Vacation were Chevy at his utter peak!

Listen, any die-hard Fletch enthusiast worships Fletch and doesn't try to rate which movie is the best. Fletch initially came to us like Christ in the original, and made another bang in Fletch Lives. The thing is ... Fletch is eternal, all-knowing, and in every single one of us!!!
Who really cares which movie is better.
