'FAG!'

Imagine the controversey if these films were released now. I know that kind of homophobia was satriical of the way teenage boys interact with one another, but G.L.A.A.D would probably demand that it be cut. It's a shame really, talking about satire... people take it as face value and thanks to political correctness, there isn't so much of it about in today's world, even though we need it more now than ever.

"You average, typical, blocking the view of a God-damn, average, victim Bastard!"

One of the best lines in the movie.

I want the doctor to take your picture so I can look at you from inside as well.

I always mute that part. It is highly offensive.

There were protests by gay rights activists at movies long before this film came out. I think the line in this film is quite obvious a jibe at the way teenage boys feel about being open on the subject that I can't imagine anyone would take offence.

Whatever you do, don't watch the Michael J. Fox movie Teen Wolf.

In that, the main character's friend asks something like, "Are you gonna tell me that you're a fag? 'Cause I don't know if I can take that."

it should only offend bikers today

There's also a deleted scene from Back to the Future where MJF says to Doc, "What if I go back to the future and end up...GAY!?" MJF was clearly a homophobe. Oh and he also chloroformed George.

In the Dire Straits song "Money for Nothing" the local station blanks out the word *beep* in the song.

reply

I thought they were referring to cigarettes. :)

reply

Theyre referring to Boy George actually

The only thing more offensive than using vulgar language is censorship. Sanitizing song lyrics to avoid offending people (as if that was the main purpose of rock-and-roll) is extremely offensive.

Even though I'm quite Liberal and totally support gays, I do agree people (while good-intentioned) are way too reactionary and PC. When people complain about a little insignificant thing like that, it also detracts from serious things to justifiably be upset about, like actual hateful discrimination. That holds true with anything.

I think in any situation, the CONTEXT matters much more than the actual word.

There were gay people in the 80s too, it just was more of an "alternative lifestyle" and not really in the mainstream, except probably for areas like San Francisco or NYC.

Calling a heterosexual male a homosexual will always be seen as a putdown, regardless of how tolerant you are of gay rights.

No, it won't, that's the funny thing. If you said it to another bigot it's probably an enormous insult, but to a non bigot it's harmless. Calling me gay is no worse than calling me a pilot or a nephew because all three are just descriptions of people you'd find in society. Though using the word fag would irk me it would not be an insult to me, but to a group I have no problem with, you would in effect be attacking a group I am not affiliated with in order to get a rise out of me. The thinking behind that cracks me up!

As a European gamer I come across Russians a lot and one of the few words they know in English and use as an insult is 'fag' and the only rebuttals they get are from other Russians or immature children. But calling a typical adult a fag won't intimidate them because your first attack is confirming that you, as a bigot, are inferior to them and they won't feel the need to lower themselves to counter.

Hence why use of the word fag or *beep* generally gets the least responses, it bounces off decent people, but insult me in another way and I may bite.

I'm pro-gay as well, and I think movies should be allowed to present realistic characters, flaws and all, and not be forced to write characters as role models who conveniently have all the right views. It's pretty silly when you have all these period pieces and the main character is conveniently the one guy who's 100% not racist, not anti-gay, but everyone else in the movie is. The write the character to be palatable by our standards rather than considering the period in which they lived. That retroactively applies to movies like Bill and Ted, which came from a time when homosexuality was much less accepted, especially in the middle of the AIDS scare.

Most modern comedy is made for the obnoxious, Red Bull-drinking, MMA-loving, Call of Duty-playing frat boy crowd, so that doesn't surprise me.

reply

Funny because I watched this last night and when this scene came on I was thinking that it would cause so much controversy now a days.
