Crypt Keeper In Season 1

In the first season Crypty's personality stands out as being much more dark and sinister than in most of the subsequent seasons. Much more solemn and thought he still has his puns they're not as over the top or silly as in the following seasons and he has a noticably far darker, more sinister demeanor. Apparently because of limitations with the budget and what they could do with the puppet his personality was kept more serious in the first season but I actually preferred him that way and wish he'd been kept that way in the remaining seasons. I still like the funny, OTT Crypty but in the first season he had the perfect balance of being scary and funny.

I agree. The solemn, serious & scary CK from Season 1 is a much better character than is the silly dress-up clown buffoon CK from the later seasons & movies. They never should have degraded the CK character like that. I say Season 1 CK is a horror character but Seasons 2-7 & films CK is a non-horror, comic character.

usually the way it goes.

like what happened to Freddy Krueger. Who became just as corny as the CK after the 3rd film.

In Season 2 he actually was still kinda like he was in the first season, more puns and jokes but not to the extent he did in season 3 onward. Definitely beginning with 3 they made him much more comical. I still like him as a funny character as I said, but in the first season I think it was something of a happy accident that he was much more serious and sinister with his personality and sense of humor.

The exact same thing happened with the Crypt Keeper in the EC comics from the 50's, in which this show was based. In the first few issues he was much more serious and sinister, then gradually became more comical and over-the-top with the silly puns, which became a staple of the character. I like both versions of the character and am glad that the TV series sort of reflected the changes he went through in the comics that inspired them. It's just too bad we never saw the Vault Keeper or the Old Witch in this show, but at least they were in the animated spinoff.
