Why did the family always allow Steve in the house?

Carl couldn’t stand him and he wasn’t friends with anyone in the family. Was there ever a given reason why they allowed him to wreck havoc in their house outside of sitcom logic?

My advice stick to the first season where Steve Urkle is in only one episode for like one minute. So many people liked his cameo so much they put him into the show in season 2 and by season 3 he was a main character from then on. I've always liked Urkel but I only ever watched the later seasons of the show as a kid. I was surprised when I watched the first season on DVD from Netflix 10 or so years ago and Urkel wasn't in all the season 1 episodes.

Personally I agree with a friend of mine. Without Urkel, this show is too similar to other family sitcoms of the time. Urkel made the show different and entertaining. I'm sorry you hate most of this show.

I don’t hate it. I think it’s entertaining. I was just asking if there was ever a reason why they put up with his shenanigans.

Because the family is soft and super conscientious. They fear being guilty for hurting his feelings. That makes them easy to take advantage of.

And Urkel is extremely persistent and manipulative. He knows how easily they give up and get used to it if he just keeps on treating them however he wants. And he uses their guilty conscience against them several times.
