Bull sh!t. Nick was a liar and a cop. Mac loved her and was going straight, with a good business starting up. He was the better choice, and she saw it too.

Did you know condoms have serial numbers on? Oh I guess you never had to roll 'em down that far.

reply

Please, Nick was twice the man Mac was.

in life, it really doesn't matter to someone's feelings who is the better fit. if its real love, they'll go with that person.
anyway, mac pined for jo ann for some time. she was a big reason he wanted to be legit and not sell "snow".

reply

Heh, I was so hoping (as well) that Kurt Russell's character, Nick, would end up with Jo Ann as well. Especially with that speech he made to her in her restaurant (that ended up asking her to dinner), which I thought was the best damn line in the entire movie, but alas it was not to be. Basically, if you've got Mel Gibson in a movie like this, then bets are he's gonna end up with the girl because he's readily more eye-catching than his opposite (for some). Plus he was, like, THE Sex Symbol back then.

Its like James Marsden vs. Hugh Jackman, so to speak. Marsden always looses the girl (at least until "27 Dresses") and Hugh always wins her heart in the end. Just my view on it.

You Were so Beautiful, before that day. And then I heard what you said... man, that was ugly.

reply

Who is she really?
This β€œJo Ann”...
Her wine storage abilities are pretty leaky. Huge flaw. And one that really makes her unredeemable.

reply

i too thought it was a pretty good speech and that she was going to forgive him and get back with him, felt bad for mac,
but then when mac son called her on the restaurant phone, nick got up to listen in on her conversation pretending to get matches only as he walk back to his spot u see her notice he already had a match-box in front of him, that's when she knows his whole speech is
b u l l s h i t, that she can't really trust him coz he's always going to be a cop first, she then talks a bit more to the kid and notices that the matches that were already by the ashtray have disappeared out of view

which is a shame as i believe he really liked her, but still his friend saw her first and he knew at once that mac came to the restaurant coz he loved her, it was not cool of him trying to steal his friend thunder/ chance with girl of his legit future dream...

now if she had turned down mac, sure give it a try! isnt there some code of honor among friends?

reply

He made it up to them buy shooting the crooked fbi guy and saving Mac.And getting them together at the end. She was up for grabs before that. I found her to be be a bit shallow in the beginning.

reply

Am I the only one who wanted her to end up with Carlos? I think he was the real hero of this story. He also had 60 tonnes of thai stick coming in. It was on the way!!

lol

you are not the only one ... carlos was the Hero ..

OP---

nick lied and was a manipulator. even though they forgave him in the end, i think mac was mroe sincere and real and honest.

if you have never dated (or married) a liar, then you dont really understand.

reply

The situation was way more complicated for Nick than it was for Mac, that doesn't mean that he was a liar.

reply

LMFAO complicated or not, lying is lying. AND HE LIED. i like nick, but the fact is he LIED. if youy say otherwise you are ewither stupid or have problems with facts. like, does 2+2=5 to you?

yes, it does mean he was a liar

reply

Um, you do realize Mac was a major liar as well, right?

His major lie being that he was going straight while going through with the largest drug deal of his career.

I like it after he had the hot tub with JoAnne, and then his pager goes off, and she is like "WTF!?" He tried to play it off, but they both knew he was doing a drug deal again.

reply

What exactly did he lie about, genius? I want examples. The worst thing he did in the whole movie was to try and eavesdrop on her phone conversation at the restaurant.

reply

I know that Jo Ann accuses him of lying in that one scene. Funny how that's so awful but Mac being a drug dealer is OK.

reply

first, dealing drugs is a business, and a completely separate issue from lying and betraying a friend or family member. hell, that ain't even apples and oranges there, bosoxrule, it's more like apples and accordians.

(and also, would depend on a person's mores regarding drugs. but let's not open that kettle of fish)

deceit and manipulation and betrayal are HARD CRIMES as far as i am concerned, but even so i still gave nick friesha a pass because he was so damn cool and b/c i just like kurt russell so much. and in the end, friends made up over it so it mattered not.

but i think we were all saying for the record that nick was really the d0uchebag in this story, not mac.

(if you still want me to comment on the exact lines, i will post again when i get a chance)

It's really interesting how some could see Nick as the better man for Jo-Ann versus Mac.

At first we were led to believe Nick had some feelings for Jo-Ann that were genuine, and perhaps he was attracted (what man with a pulse would NOT be hot for Jo-Ann?! ha)

HOWEVER, the cop in Nick and his eagerness to bust Mac over-rode any personal feelings he may have had for Jo-Ann.

He just used her as an end justifies the means gambit--by any means necessary. Nick was sorely using her.

That scene in the restaurant when he lies to her about getting up to get matches when his lighter had been on the bar just before she took that phone call was the moment when we could have called "b---s---" on everyhing Nick had been telling Jo-Ann.

Further, Towne's basic premise for this film is to make the traditional white-hate guy (Nick) into the bad guy in a way, but then make a ex-drug dealer black-hat guy (Mac) into the guy who deserved the woman's love, because he was the nicer and more sincere guy.

Playing the reversal game was the core of Towne's theme for the film. Change everything up from the norm and reverse the roles.

That's why Nick's speech and actions, no matter how they might have temporarily misled the viewers into thinking he was a nice guy deserving of Jo-Ann, were fake leads to throw us off scent.

Then we were brought back to earth by seeing how he creeped around listening to her at the restaurant with the matches lie. That's when we knew he was in that restaurant for only one reason.....part of his JOB, not for personal reasons.

Another hint was at the end--he let Mac go and did nothing to block his reunion with Jo-Ann, in fact he facilitated their reunion by calling on their friend in harbor patrol to get them together with the boat.

If he'd ever been TRULY after Jo-Ann he'd not as easily given her over to Mac. He'd have kept trying to earn her affections.

But his job on the drug deal was over; his pursuit of Mac legally was over. Therefore, he could have cared less if Jo-Ann went into Mac's arms. In fact, he was glad to help it along.

reply

Yep, that scene with the matches is very telling.

Y'know, I could eat a peach for hours

reply

Strangely enough, I was hoping she'd end up with Mac but after Nick's speech, I was rooting for them to make it lol 

But Nick was a liar, not Mac. That seems to go a long way.

This was all classic Robert Towne. One of the true greats.

He always loved to make the "good" guy the "bad" guy and visa versa in some of his films. And he dealt in gray areas too.

The one guy "looks" slick, good, doing law enforcement etc., but he was totally exploitative of Jo Ann at the beginning just to get Mac. He was "working."

Even if he came to really like her for real later, that never voided out that he was totally using her like a tool for his policing to make the Big Bust for his career etc.

He came off as a hard guy inside....until the end....when...well you know.

The ocean rescue scene etc. But it seemed that was much the case that he never was actually interested in Jo Ann for the long term, so it was not a sacrifice to be sure she and Mac got together with a bit of a rescue, etc.
