Why didn't Mike + the 'bots mention the Galactica footage?

Were there some kind of copyright restrictions that forbade any mention of Battlestar Galactica during the MST3K episode for "Space Mutiny"? I remember when I watched the episode for the first time and was stunned that there were no BSG commets made during the stock footage scenes.

I agree, I scratched my head wondering why they weren't riffing on the borrowed BSG footage, or the fact that the good guys are flying the Cylon Raider ships, while the space pirates fly the Colonial ships.

I think I read an interview with one of the MST3K guys, and his story is that they had a ton of BSG references, but somehow none of them made the final cut. I assume that, like any other TV show, a MST3K episode is more or less created in the editing room over a period of days or weeks; i.e., for every joke that makes it to the final product, there are a bunch that don't. Is it possible that they assembled the final cut, and realized too late that none of the Battlestar jokes made it in?

Actually, I saw an interview with the MST3K guys, on one of their official DVD releases, and they commented on not mentioning the Battlestar Galactica footage.
They said, of course they were familiar with that show, and recognized the footage, but they said they came up with enough other good jokes and commentary, that they just didn't end up needing to comment on it.
They even said, in hindsight, that it was probably odd to not mention it, but they didn't regret the material they chose to use.

I'm glad they didn't. It would have been too easy.

The footage wasn't the only thing ripped off... did you notice how they referred to the fighters as "Vipers?"

I spoke to the producer of this film Hope Holiday, and she said they got the footage for $20,000 USD's. You can even hear the voices of Apollo and Starbuck as they are flying the vipers into the big ship. I watched the movie with the star and producer years ago and we all had a good laugh. It does make money and is a cult film. And my favorite series was Battlestar Galactica. So it was real nice to sit and laugh with the stars and producers of this film.

I'm surprised they didn't mention the brick wall.
