Probably the dumbest ending of any alien movie I've seen so far.

They couldn't simply use a rocket to return them back to the planet?
The government was cool with just letting them join the general population?

You're taking it too seriously, it was just a fun film for kids.

I agree with the OP, the ending was so bad even for a 80's movie.

The ending made it look like a parody. NASA was able to send a probe to whatever planet and back to Earth again within a day, it seemed. They could easily have sent the aliens back.
