Gene Simmons as an Arab terrorist?

He's Jewish!!

reply

He is Jewish and from Israel, but he does look a bit Arab. Also, he said that he saw the role as a challange.

Yeah, but when it was released he pulled it off convincingly. Now that we have been exposed to almost two decades of media coverage of the various Arab nations we are at war with, it's too easy to spot the errors in Gene Simmons's performance.

Besides that, it seems in bad taste for an actor who is Israeli by birth to play an Arab villain. Sort of like whites playing villainous Black emancipated slaves in the movie "The Klansman".

Well, in the mid-'80s the Arabs weren't seen as the threat to us that they are today, so it wasn't necessary to get those fine points down. And getting an Arab to play an Arab terrorist would be equally problematic.

I think Gene Simmons played the part quite well. I think they darkened his skin, and obviously he's wearing a wig, but he was suitably menacing for the role. My only complaint: Not a single shot of his tongue. He could have at least used it to push the grenade out of his mouth.

I'm guessing that's why he took the role...

There were plenty of films in the 80s that portrayed Arabs as terrorists. I suppose the producers could not find any out of work Arab origin actors in the 80s!

Its that man again!!

There have been non Arabic speaking actors who have pulled it off. Think Robert Forster in "The Delta Force" back in 1986.

Simmons was deliciously wicked as the Arab terrorist villain. He always seems to be having a ball in colorful bad guy roles.

If you were to ask Ace Frehley and Peter Criss, they'll probably tell you he's not really acting.
