Was Danny DeVito playing against type here?

He seems to often play a a variation of a hateful, despicable person: Taxi, Penguin, Matilda's dad, It's Always Sunny, Twins. But in Throw Momma from the Train, he's a playing what could be amounted to a sweet if very naïve and childlike man.
