Courtney Love?

I haven't seen this movie but was considering checking it out because I am a fan of Alex Cox's work and because Courtney Love is in it.

What is she like in this role? What sort character does she play?

Many people talk her down and she does have a bad rep. but I really enjoyed watching her portrayal of Althea Flynt in 'The People vs Larry Flint' and I also didn't mind her starring role in 'Man on the Moon' with Jim Carey.

Granted it's been awhile since I tried to watch it, but Love was the reason I couldn't sit through this. Her character basically screeches through every line. Think Madonna's bad acting + playing a b!tch on crack. Beyond awful. I though Love was passable in Man on the Moon, but in this, she was unbearable.

And if that's not bad enough, Joe Strummer can't act for sh#t. And I love the man. Acting just wasn't his forte at all.

If you are a fan of "Alex Cox, [former] Critically Acclaimed Director" and Courtney Love, Critically Acclaimed actress, and that is what you hope to see, this movie won't do it for you.

Think instead, Alex Cox takes a lot of his buddies and most of the cast from Sid & Nancy (and The Pogues, Shane MacGowan, Elvis Costello, Grace Jones, Dennis Hopper, Joe Strummer, and Jim Frickin Jarmusch...) on a drunken holiday in Spain where they hold up in an abandoned set from a spaghetti western. Makes a bizarre absurdist parody/tribute to spaghetti westerns/crime capers/on-the-road/blaxploitation flicks. Destroys his career. That's what this is. If you can handle that, and you love absurdity for it's own sake, then you may really get a kick out of this ( as I do).

The previous poster, while a bit heavy handed, is essentially accurate in describing Courtney's character and performance. It is one of the screechiest most irritating characters ever to grace film stock. That being said, for me it's just part of the insane charm of this delightfully wierdo flick.

Her character is the underage pregnant half of an interracial (intended at the time for shock value) married couple of criminals. She expects to be taken care of, have her every whim catered to, and shrieks like a juvenile banshee whenever she gets a chance. That being said, she's the most rational of the 4 protagonists who've stumbled upon the hideout of the MacMahon clan. And she is the (not-so-unwilling) subject of constant sexual advances by the MacMahons, despite her personality, utter lack of couth or grace, and her very pregnant state (and the fact that she's married to ice-cold badass killer Norwood).

And that my friend is the answer to your question.

Not trying to talk you out of it, just making sure you have the correct type of expectations going in. This is not oscar fare, this is weirdness for weirdness sake humor. It's not good in the normal sense of the word, but I love it.

You had me at, "[If] you love absurdity for it's own sake, then you may really get a kick out of this."

"Weirdness for weirdness sake of humor", now that's what I like to hear! Sounds like I should watch this baked ;)

I really appreciate the informative response Doomferret, thank you!

You're welcome. Hopefully will feel the same after you've watched it! It's full of bizarre non sequiturs. It's also got some great faux spaghetti western music by Pray for Rain and/or The Pogues (can't remember who does which piece without rewatching it). Who did music for.... that's right, Sid & Nancy. You may recognize Norwood (Sy Richardson) as the tech/nurse from the methadone clinic in S&N. Oh yeah, members of the Circle Jerks are in it as well. And musical singalong numbers.

I dig, sounds like a hoot!

No, she did good. Contrary to popular opinion, Courtney Love is an excellent actress and a rock musician and singer. At least this fan (that's me) thinks so!

It's on Hulu. I think you may need to plus the membership to see it. I think they still have a two week trial that you can cancel before your credit card is charged.

Actually, the movie can be seen through the IMDb link. It appears no registration with Hulu is required at all.

Enjoy the movie!:-)

She is a feckin' skank whore in the film, as she is in real life.
Her performance nauseated me and made it more difficult to watch this difficult-to-watch film.

Love essentially plays herself. An annoying loudmouth harpy shrew of a broad.
