Why is Stoltz in love with a girl he's never spoken to?

What kind of an idiot blows thousands of dollars on earrings for said girl he doesn't know from a hole in the wall?

Why were we meant to root for this idiot?

Why did we get no real scenes establishing any of the key relationships like in Pretty In Pink where our sense of what the people mean to each other is firmly clarified? We get NO real sense of what Stoltz and Masterson's relationship is till like halfway through the movie at best. And AGAIN why does he want this girl? Why?

Why does Masterson chauffer them around?

Why is Masterson in love with Stoltz? Again screenplay forgets to give her a reason and he's a complete tool that she could clearly do better than.

Why is this piece of ass rated, even slightly, higher than Pretty In Pink where the characters relationships make infinitely more sense?

Because it's a better movie. Ducky is an awful character. I enjoy Eric Stoltz as an actor much more than Andrew McCarthy. Better music..better bullies. Better dad.

It SO isn't a better movie. Like not at all. You didn't address a single issue with the script I brought up. Just that you hate Ducky.

I don't like Ducky anymore than the next guy. But the relationship between him and Andie made sense and was written with some depth.

Sorry to insult what is clearly your favourite film in the world EVER judging by that dramatic (and very personal) reply.

Look love it all you want... but it's lazy, arguably the laziest of Hughes' teen efforts.

Sorry if seeing this film for what it is makes me a "jerk" but come on, He blew THOUSANDS for an "IDEA" cause "he's a teenager. duh!" Give me a break.

I also love how "guys are stupid" is also used as an excuse for why we should care and root for him. Like... NO.

I really like this movie, but all of your complaints are valid, so I can understand why you didn't care for it.

You have to be able to relate to the characters, enjoy the humor, and really dig the music to like this film. If not, then this movie isn't for you.

I do think that some things could've been done better. I agree with you about the blowing of the savings on the earrings for one date with a chick who (he even admitted) was only going out with him to set him up to get his ass kicked. I would have bailed out of the date as soon as I found that out.

I didn't really find myself rooting for Keith. In fact, I kinda wanted him to get his ass kicked in the end (at least a little bit) just because of how smug he was with his Dad and on the date. I watch it with a "Uh-oh, what has this idiot gotten himself into?" attitude more than a "Go get 'em Keith!" attitude. People always assume that you're supposed to root for the main characters in movies, but I rarely do.

What did she see in him? Good question. Maybe the fact that she was an unpopular tom-boyish-looking girl who many guys mistook for a lesbian limited her options.

Yes, thank you. Everything that you wrote perfectly sums up all the problems with this movie and why I really don't like it.

I would actually argue, though, that Some Kind of Wonderful AND Pretty in Pink are both lacking in character and relationship development. Andie and Duckie's relationship was developed pretty well, but Andie's relationship with Blane was severely lacking. Throughout the whole movie he was a jerk to her, so why would she choose him in the end?

I just think that both movies were very poorly written.

I disagree with the opinion that Some Kind of Wonderful lacks character development. Some have complained that why would Keith be obsessed with Amanda, a girl he barely knew, to the point where he would spend a large amount of money. The Hollywood Bowl scene explains this fact as Keith admits that part of him wanted to attract Amanda because she was a popular girl, so he could prove himself to the popular kids. Keith apologies and says this was a mistake. Some Kind of Wonderful delves into the struggles with individual identity, who people really are in relation to who they want to be.

I'd rather be hated for who I am, than loved for who I am not.

The OP apparently thinks it's unusual for a male to spend lots of money/effort to attempt to 'buy' the affection of a really hot chick, even one they "barely know".

This is not only a common theme in movies (ala Can't Buy Me Love, Fast Times, Superbad, Weird Science, etc...), but heaven forbids, happens in real life, every.....single.....day.

Whose idea was it for the word "Lisp" to have an "S" in it?

At least in PIP some of the characters looked like teenagers. In this film (which Molly Ringwald famously turned down) most of the "teens" look like what they are IRL ... 25 - 30+ years old (with the emphasis on old). It just looks plain weird.

I also agree with your script comments. John Hughes ... slumming.🐭

it was just a remake of Pretty in Pink because John Hughes wanted Ducky to win but he forgot one thing Ducky Looked like Jon Cryer and not Andrew McCarthy should of cast Someone else as Ducky and Made Ducky a better character and you hear the song Pretty in Pink
