Interesting question.
If Kristen did bring Dr. Simms into the dream, and she saw Freddy it would've proven he existed and she could've then done something to help the children. I believe that's what she was actually trying to do all along, it was just the fact that she didn't believe in Freddy that hindered her from doing so.
Kristen might not wanted to have put somebody else at danger by bringing her into the dream, but she pulled other people in when scared so why not Dr. Simms? Why would you want to protect Dr. Simms, but not the other children of Elm Street? Why even wait until she was institutionalised to do it? Kirsten could've dragged her mother into the dream to prove she wasn't insane.
Bear in mind though, we don't really know how the dream power worked. Or if there were any restrictions as to who Kristen could pull in. When Nancy showed up, she gave her permission. Something Dr. Simms had never done. And Nancy had previously dealt with Freddy. Maybe the dream power only worked for specific people. I would suggest that it only worked on people who had previously met Freddy in their dreams? But Kristen managed to bring Doctor Gordon into her dreams also.
Maybe the key was belief. By the time Dr. Gordon was in the Dream World, he had met Amanda Kreuger and was more open to belief in Nancy's claims about Freddy attacking the children. Everybody else that Kristen brought into the Dream World had already encountered Freddy in their dreams previously.
