Perhaps not the best ever but certainly much more satisfying than I had dared hope when I caught this film for the first time today on This TV. For those who have any understanding and/or interest of WWII history, this film is a must. Very well done.
Remember When Movies Didn't Have To Be Politically Correct?
I saw this first at a theater, and the older couple in front of me laughed joyously throughout the film.
Afterwards, as we were leaving, the wife said in an unmistakeable English accent to her husband, "That was just the way it was!" They walked of, happily comparing memories of their own childhoods.
Just seeing people who had obviously shared so much with the characters in the movie enjoy it so much gave me almost as much joy as the film itself did.
i don't consider it the best film ever, but i do like it very much, especially the grumpy old grandfather. the ending is brilliant.
