Why is there non segareted prom in 1957?

Did anybody notice that there are both black and white students at the dance...that takes place in 1957?! Is that a goof?

I thought school segregation was abolished in 1954. Besides this is a Canadian film.

And even if this had taken place in America, it's not like whites and blacks were separated from each other in every school across the U.S.

Yeah, that was a Southern issue while the story in this movie takes place somewhere in the North. The first movie took place along Lake Erie near Cleveland (although it was shot in the Toronto area).
