boring or genius

i think this movie is quite boring. any other ideas? what do you think?

reply

It's a Fantastic movie.

My favorite part being the end; when the girl get's hit by the car.
Pure, demented Greenaway.

reply

Genius. It made me realise why Greenaway is considered a great director. I almost don't want to check out any of the rest of his films for fear of being disappointed now that I've seen it. Do you think I should or would I just be disappointed?

reply

Peter Greenaway's ingenuity was sealed in my mind after I saw 'Prospero's Books'--it's above criticism, and in a league of its own. I watched it for the 3rd time last night within a span of weeks and was floored again by its baroque visual beauty.
You definitely should give Greenaway's other films a try, mainly 'A Zed & Two Noughts (1985)' or even 'The Pillow Book (1996)'; and if you're feeling a little adventurous, try 'Baby of Macon (1993)'.

reply

Drowning, Cook, and Baby of Macon are fantastic films and in my top rated all time greats, but I can't get on with any of his other ones.

reply

The british Kubrick, this film is a masterpiece, the symetry, music, mise en scene and number of shots filmed at the magic hour are beyond words.

Its stuffed with so much intelligence, the average uneducated human will find it "boring"

reply

Genius. The Hangmans Cricket alone would make him genius. But it's everything, it's the best Greenaway, with the best footage, the best structure, the best Nyman. It has everything. The games, the numbers, the women, the apples, the water, the drownings, the beach house, the typewriter, The Jaguar, the fireworks, the fish, the boat, the ending. And Smut, with his own private hell. Greenaway is a genius, and the film is genius.

This has to be one of my favourite films of the '80's a fresh sip of lime to all that saccharine stuff we got during that, possibly the worst of decades in general. I had this film on VHS but wore it out. I'm glad I finally recorded it last night on Film 4! There was a warning that viewers might find certain scenes offensive! I know I did! Terrible! The cutting at times to get the quantity of adverts in was stupid beyond belief.

It's still fresh and questioning even now. I love counting along with the film. I watched with a "Drowning" virgin too, they looked at me puzzled when I started counting but soon got into the spirit and started pointing out when they found a number on the screen.

Anyone for a game of Hangman's Cricket? Now wouldn't that be fun!

"Guess I'm not concerned enough about getting away with it."

reply

Saying the 80s is possibly the worst decade of films in general is a throwaway comment really because it can't possibly be backed up with anything other than anecdotal evidence. I will agree though that the cutting into adverts was annoying. On more than one occasion they cut mid sentence.

I ask why did Greenaway choose to use the same incidental music in The Cook, The Thief, His Wife and Her Lover?

Boring

I saw this film for free... and still wanted my money back.

It affects me in ways I don't understand. Genius.

genius

I've just finished watching it for the first time and I'm undecided. I love the premise but the execution seems off. Stylistically, it's a very impressive film. Much like The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover. They have similar soundtracks and are both visually stunning.

I feel The Cook is a far superior film though, in terms of the execution of the story. It's so well paced and the performances are top notch. This one is a little too slow for what it is at times and I found my attention span wane after 45 minutes or so. It's a shame because it made such a good initial impression on me.

reply

I like how it's different. It's not for everyone though.

I vote "genius." The cinematography is ravishing. The whole conceit is delicious.

reply

It's one of my favourite films of all time, not just 80's. So for me, it's more in the genius category.

I love the visuals, atmosphere, black comedy, and how uncompromising it is. But I agree with the poster who said it's not for everyone. There's no doubt some would find it boring.
