Dan Akroyd should have been nominated for an oscar

Just watched review of this on Ebert and Roeper website. Siskel passionately stated that Dan Akroyd should get a nomination for this film.

That's awesome.

Well, he did get one two years later for Driving Miss Daisy. Maybe he didn't get one for this film because it was too comedic. Yes, he was very good as Friday, but you know how comedies are treated at Oscar time.

I'm glad to hear that b/c I always liked Siskel and Ebert's opinions. Comedy is difficult to get nominated for, especially laugh out loud, silly comedy like this movie. Hollywood seems to favor comedies that have doses of sentimentality, drama, and 'meaning' behind them, like JUNO for example.

Usually with good reason.

It's funny you should mention Juno. Both movies featured a hamburger phone.

I liked how Siskel & Ebert would point out how great a comedic performance can be, I remember them both saying that Steve Martin deserved a supporting nom for Little shop of horrors.

I also personally feel that Bill Murray deserved 2 noms before he got to Lost in translation, one for Groundhog Day and another for Kingpin, both brilliant performances.

and Akroyd certainly gave it his all here, he nailed the voice, the face and seemed to lose himself in the role, something that all the serious actors get awards for.

Dis not think Ackroyd's performance was that goof to be an Oscar nom.

Its that man again!!

If the Academy wasn't so uptight about comedies, Aykroyd could have been nominated for acting and/or writing a couple different times. It really makes no sense in general for an entire genre like comedy to just go ignored, especially if it is based on creative word play or satire. That's arguably much more difficult to write for and perform than Oscar bait drama ever will be.

Definitely. O Brother, Where Art Thou should have a whole box of Oscars.
