I'm aware of Tom Mankiewicz's work over the years, starting with Bond, then Superman, then Dragnet. He seemed to have a good grasp of the "entertainment factor"...what will entertain audiences. But it's interesting that Bond, Superman, Dragnet were all iconic franchises that he came in and gave a sort of comedic spin on. I'd like to hear your thoughts regarding pure adaptation of comic books or television shows vs. adding a comedic twist to them to try and produce a successful film.

reply

It is really hard for people to choose which element will work to give the public what they want and make it work. Some comic book ideas that I have expierenced have work being apadted just as they are using animation for it crosses over well.Superman I&II Donner and Mankiewicz's twist of adding just the right type of humor to be taken serious and make what would appear unbelievable believable. Work extremly well as with the Super Villians for Non to have so much power but be so child like was brialliant for it gave the youth someone to relate to at the same time be frighten of without being to frighten. The mixture worked so well.

Dragnet the TV series was an icon where Joe Friday was so serious and percise time wise. When Mankiewicz wrote the script and infused the same type of humor it worked very well again.I enjoyed working with him immensely for I thought he had a great manner of expressing things on the screen.Where some people just can't do that cross over that delicate line without over doing it one way or the other.I believe Mankiewicz learned a lot from Donner and vice versa.

how did they make that stuffed dog stay on the car?

reply

where can I find/ download the amazing guitar music, played during car chases and action scenes.

reply

My suggestion would be to contact Universal and ask which department in archieves would handle that particular request.

reply

My cousin did the music on this film, maybe I can ask him about it. Yes his name is Ira Newborn, who also did Planes, Trains, and Automobiles that year too.

reply

It was tied down well and still there were several shots of the same scene and they kept attaching it until it worked.

reply

do a lot of actors come to this board and read what fans say? i would get my feelings hurt if they said something mean.

Jack

This is a treat. Thank you for offering to answer questions.

My attraction to this film was that I remembered "Dragnet," from TV, as a child. I think that most of the cast was old enough to remember it, too. Did any of you offer memories, or suggestions to Akroyd, or the director, about the Jack Webb/Joe Friday persona? Did Harry Morgan have any special in-put, given that he was in the TV program? Akroyd doesn't bear the least resemblence to Webb, but he had Friday down COLD.

It would be fun to hear any behind-the-scenes memories.

reply

Dan was a serious Web fan and researched the part very well.He walked around with an earphone with Web's voice all the time.We really had a good time filming the picture.Harry was a gas to work with except when his memory would go at times he would forget where he was that was a bit sad.

reply

wow, thats very interesting. I'm impressed.

In the scene where Pep & Friday are rushing to the airport and Friday is driving like a maniac, Pep is singing a song that I always was curious about. I can barely understand the lyrics except when Friday pipes in,..."Keepin crisp and even(?)" What song was this?

Thanks in advance...

reply

You have my mind going so I will have the answer for you this week.

reply

I'm pretty sure it was the standard holiday tune "Good King Wenceslas". I could be wrong though...

reply

I just looked up the lyrics for Good King Wenceslas and there is a line in there that sounds exactly like the song he's singing...it talks about the snow being "deep and crisp and even"! Thank you Justin, I think you got it!

Jack,

Big fan! Thanks much for answering the fans questions. I find it really cool you come here and take part in the imdb. More actors and actresses should follow your lead.

Loved this movie and it's really a treat to get an actors take.

Are you threating me Master Jedi?

reply

hi jack,
i second what big_black said....loved all the performances in dragnet, and thanks.

What was supposed to be happening to Emil Muzz when they were slamming the drawer shut in the interrogation room?

reply

[deleted]

In the unedited version (read: on VHS, DVD, or HBO/SHOWTIME/CINEMAX/ETC/ETC/AD NAUSEUM/IN FINITUM), Streebeck (Hanks) informs Muzz exactly what is going to happen when he slams the drawer. To answer your question, somehow slamming the drawer caused Muzz to be struck in the 'nads, thereby giving him excellent reason to scream as he did.

How can free will coexist with Divine Preordination?

reply

It would not be a good feeling to have someone slam the drawer on your testicles.

reply

A close version of castration. Having your testicles slamed in a drawer would not be pleasent.

Hey Jack,

Since questions about this scene have been going around, here's a link to a column I wrote about it a few weeks ago. In the archives, I also have columns about both versions of Superman II. Enjoy...

My question has to do with a dancer. I'm not sure if she was in the movie or not. However, she was in the video.

Here's my question, copied from another thread. Hopefully you can help.

"Does anyone know the name of the female dancer in the video? She's standing just to Tom Hanks' right side with the lightly colored teased hair.

She was also a dancer in couple of Janet Jackson's videos from the 80's (What have you done for me lately and When I think of you).

I've wanted to know who she was for twenty years."

Ditto that my brother. Creed

There’s so many shots of LA, since I’ve moved out here I’ve ran across quite a few that reminded me of the movie. There are still a few locations that I’m curious about; “Jerry Caesar’s” place, the “Police Dogs” hot dog stand across from City Hall, the snake pit, and the strip bar.

reply

Oh, if you are the actor who played the heavy Emil Muzz, I must say it is a pleasure writing to you. First of all, it was good to see you have some dialogue in the film, unlike in Superman 2 as Non. I loved that character too, very scary. Also, I don't know if you met the man who did the music, Ira Newborn, because he is my cousin and a very talented, funny guy.

reply

Yeah... Non was a killer character. I loved his teddybear streak though. Almost as if he would like to tear your face off just because he wanted to play, but didn't understand that's evil... wonderfully done. And without a single word. Hat's off.

Don't do quaaludes or you'll end up sounding like Roman Polanski.

Hey did the LAPD really use the tank with the battering ram in real life or was that just made up for the movie?

I don't think LAPD uses any ex-military equipment like the Cadillac M114 used in "Dragnet" or Ford M8 Greyhound used in "Die Hard."

Dear Jack,

My wife and I are both BIG fans of this movie! We watch it whenever we can.

One question you might be able to answer: What was the jet fighter they used to track down the business jet? I think it might have been an F4 Phantom or a Phamtom II. Please let us know...

Who was the girl hanks was in bed with during one of the opening scenes?

reply

Why are you idiots feeding the delusions of this johnjon fool?

reply

Because johnjon is actually actor Jack O'Halloran. Whether you believe that or not is your opinion, but he has confirmed on several different threads that he is the actor who played Emil Muzz in this movie.
