When Do You Think that Anne

Actually fell in love with Gilbert in the movie? I can't pick out a distinguishable point in the movie where it is obvious that she does, or that she does love him. Thoughts?

I think when she read his note at the gazebo, you could tell she was jealous he had announced his engagement to Christine, he was kinda gloating. I think he wanted to let Anne knew she blew her chance and was moving on. It's too bad they never shot a scene of him breaking off his engagement. I read years ago Jonathan and the actress that portrayed Christine were dating at that time.

I also kinda think Gilbert thought Anne was going to shout she loved him when he raced off the train. But she only said thank you.

I think she fell for him early on but just didn't know what those feelings were. She was too tied up with her own schooling and advancement, and helping Mirilla and Mathew at Green Gables as well as her own pride and wish for 'the dream man' to realize her true feelings for him. I think of it kind of like a Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy relationship. it slowly came on that an exact moment would not be pin pointed. However, Gils illness and the thought of him dying I think broke that stubbornness out of Anne and she finally realized what exactly he meant to her.

It's been a while since I've watched these, but didn't Anne already have feelings for him, at least a little, by the end of the first film? Am I remembering wrong? Did she go through the whole first film without warming to Gilbert at all?

reply

You are correct. When he switched the school assignments so Anne could stay in Avonlea and he took the school in Carmody, they did make up and Anne greatly softened towards him.

Okay. I did read the first book as well and I wasn't sure where I was half-remembering from. I love these first two Anne movies. I've never made it through the third one, which seemed like too much time had passed and they couldn't capture the feel of the first films. I haven't seen the Netflix Anne. Road to Avonlea, which I watched in the States as Avonlea was a great show as well.

That was from the movie, I think in the book Gilbert ends up at the White Sands school, but essentially the same ending.

I do have all three of the Kevin Sullivan mini series, and I used to watch Road to Avonlea. It was difficult to avoid in Canada.

I watched the first season of Anne, but it just was a little modernized for me. It wasn't bad or anything, it just wasn't for me.
