What do you think of the show now?

Now that the series is on dvd I'd love to hear what others think of the show now. When the show aired I was way too young to really enjoy it but I do still remember a lot of songs and certain scenes that took place.

I think the show has aged extremely well and it was definitely something special, the cast was simply exploding with talent and you really start to care about them as a family.

My only gripes are the fact that the show didn't really pay much attention to the time it was suppose to take place. Hardly anyone looks like the 1960s except Marva and you can tell she was put in the wig because they probably didn't have a skilled enough hairdresser to manager African American hair.
Also you have a black character on a show that takes place in the 1960's and nobody mentions race, the only character who faces any discrimination is the half Asian character (eye roll).
I think had the show paid more attention to times it took place and wrote more serious plots the show could have lasted more than two season.
Shame, it had the ingredients to become more remembered and something great.

4 out of 5 stars!

It feels great to finally have the show on DVD. I could just pop it in the player anytime I want and listen to the girls sing and watch them dance. It's still a great show and I totally enjoy it.
I'm watching the pilot right now :)

When Rose was going through her debutante/racist episode I did wonder if they were going to do something about Marva, but they never did. And I also wondered why none of Nick's friends said anything about adopting her or Rose. I'm curious about something that you said. You said you gave an eye roll to Rose's discrimination. Why? Both she and Marva would have faced it back then.

True but come on, Rose would have been accepted quicker than Marva. Even in classic films Asian actresses were paired opposite white actors before black actresses.
It is pretty eye roll inducing to see the pretty little Asian girl face discrimination while the sultry "hip" black girl pretty much skated through the series without any acknowledgement of her race during the turbulent 60's.

I will agree with you about Marva.
1961 is when this happened I just watched Eyes On the Prize and saw people being beaten and sprayed with hoses. They might not have wanted to get too deep into the racial thing. Hence they did one episode with Rose and that was it. I still say they both would have faced discrimination, but I see your point. Rose was my least favorite, but the debutant episode is my favorite.

Maybe if the show had lasted longer, they might had had a topical episode involving Marva.
