should they have done a 'Renegade' movie for IV?

III was a radical departure from the norm and at the end there were all kinds of possibilities for the next film.... (e.g. Kirk & his crew of renegades in the BOP off the grid on the run making do with what they can salvage Blakes 7 style for 1 or 2 movies before things get sorted out with the UFP...)

It’s a shame we didn’t get a full on ‘renegade’ movie for IV - a more Star Warsy approach to the trekverse , building on Trek III which itself had quite abit of SW influence (cantina scene, alien microbes, opening up the ST universe with more ships/spacestations, the malfunctioning Excelsior/Falcons light speed, crew becoming rebels,Kirks Temple of Doom style fight/Vulcan Temple, plus the story itself mirrored Empire Strikes Back a little)

also it'd been cool to have the Genesis trilogy stretched out to 4 films & the bookend VI TUC (with no standalone Trek V)

alternative Treks 4-6 if theyd gone the Blake 7 route:

Star Trek IV The Dark Frontier. After the successful resurrection of their comrade Captain Spock, the renegade crew of the fallen Enterprise (along with Savvik and Maltz) are forced into exile by a dangerous secret section of Starfleet led by a vengeful agent (Michael Ironside) who wants to retrieve the captured BOP to instigate a war with the Klingon empire, leading to a fierce manhunt across the galaxy.. (cue multiple planet locations, Kirk&Co in Mos Eisley environments, SW type aliens abound, Maltz as Worf type character who dies heroically saving the others, near escapes/shoot outs with Federation soldiers, Kirk v Ironside debate/end fistfight, BOP v Excelsior climax. Shades of what was to come in TUC and again in STID And to a certain extent Insurrection which sort of attempted a Trek III approach in its 2nd half)

Star Trek V The Voyage Home
. After defeating a sinister conspiracy plot in Starfleet, Admiral kirk and his renegade crew finally decide to face the federation. However on the way back to earth a mysterious alien probe begins to disrupt earths defences..

Star Trek VI The Undiscovered Country – Captain Kirk and the crew of the Enterprise A are ordered to oversee a peace treaty with the Klingons...

I actually thought that they might start the movie with Kirk and crew getting booted out of Starfleet, and then having to regroup to deal with some sort of crisis. I liked the idea of Styles and other Starfleet Captains staging a military coup, and Kirk having to take him on.

Yeah it would've been good to see Styles again getting his own back on Kirk (supporting character not the main villain)

Now that you mention it, Star Trek 2 and 3 (the latter, particularly) feel like the writers took inspiration from Blake's 7 (Kirk/Khan = Blake/Travis, Spock/McCoy = Avon/Vila, the destruction of the Enterprise = death of the Liberator, and generally a darker and edgier feel to them than your standard TOS episode).

Fortunately, they didn't kill off the entire cast at the end.

Nice to see another B7 admirer here. :) Yes, it's fortunate they didn't go that way (except for Kirk in Generations - which STILL sparks controversy to this day as to that movie's canon-worthiness).

I'd ALWAYS wanted to see more of Styles, thanks to James B. Sikking's wonderful portrayal of a full-of-himself jerk. I'd thought, back then, that they could have built on the resentment that Styles and his senior officers had for Kirk and the Enterprise, during the time Styles was (presumably) still in command of Excelsior. The intership rivalry, with Excelsior as the Slytherin to Enterprise's Gryffindor, could have been mined for some good plot ideas and possibly provided us with a better Trek V than the one we got.

I always felt like Styls was an homage to Gen. Montgomery (to Kirk's Patton).
