Why were the boys so mean to Vern?

I thought Vern was a really sweet kid and there was no reason for the other kids to be so mean to him, if I hung out with Vern I would treat him with kindness, respect and dignity.

They were only teasing him. They would rip on him but they wouldn't let anyone else do it.
