What bike(s) did you have?

My first "High end" bike was a Mongoose Californian ($214 back in 1984, much to my dad's dismay!) It was eventually stolen... I'm still bummed about it and if I ever find that maggot...

Where I grew up, GT seemed to be the most popular brand, but not with the "Hard core" riders. My next-door neighbor/best friend's older brother was a very successful local racer and he rode a Redline, though I don't remember the model. The freestyler's seemed to favor Haro.

So what did everyone else have? (Likely an amalgam like my Mongoose... GT seatpost, DK neck, Bear claw pedals)

I cruised on a very high end bike...a Huffy. With that bike I learned how to air walk in 2 weeks, once I learned not to "over rotate!"

reply

Oh yeah I had a Huffy too & a Columbia, which my friend Josh referred to as "Lead sleds"... The good thing about that Columbia was that it had the shortest crank arms that I've ever seen, which made for amazingly fast take-offs... Of course over the long haul you peddled twice as much and couldn't maintain your speed.

I had a Hutch pro racer with a compact disc crank brain pipe seat post mushroom grips bear trap pedals and air uni rims and covers still have it and its still sweet. used to race and appeared in the background of the movie.

Diamondback Viper, baby!!!!!!!!!!!
Righteous.

Well I just got my first one, it's a Leap Blade 20" BMX

I had a few different bikes since I raced in the NBL. My first was a Mongoose California, then I had a Hutch Pro, Profile Cruiser (which I still have), Powerlite and Cyclecraft. Although the last two were my bikes in the 90's. Good times.

I had a BMX

Started off with a GT Pro Performer. Best bike ever. Then stupidly switched to a GT World Tour which I hated. Next came a GT Pro Freestyle Tour with the wierd double-bend down tube. Finally got sick of GT and went to a Kuwahara Bravo Pro which is in my basement covered in cobwebs. All in all, I invested a good $1400 in bikes before I was 14. Good thing I had that paper route!

WHY. . . SO. . . SERIOUS?????

reply

GT Vertigo (I think) kind of hot orange with black speckles. I couldn't do *beep* on it, it was too heavy. It was a waste of my dad's money. I had a Huffy before that, could ride a wheelie for a while.

Man we're going back. I rode in throughout the 90's. My first High end bike was a Skyway TA (which I still have). Then, the High-High end started off with a cycle craft. I remember it was the first one I got with "3 piece cranks". Had a GT performer frame which I never rode. Rode an Auburn for a while. Rode a Supercross (with the funky seat-stay bars) for a while. Towards the later end of my bmx career, I had an S&M Dirtbike. Traded that for the new (all aluminum) Schwinn. Traded that (which I still regret)for my final bike which I still have but haven't rode in about 10 years - the S&M Holmes.

Top names in that era would have been Hutch, Redline, Mongoose, GT. I remember wanting a Free Agent at some time. Gt was always considered good, but mid- high end.

man, what times huh

a mcs mantis mini... the one with the flat spokes that would carve chunks out of the side of your toes if you ever happened to have a foot slip off of your pedal and right into your wheel. (not that that happened... no, never.)

Man I'd almost forgotten about this thread. Keep 'em coming everyone, this is cool. I love reading these.

Diamondback Viper was mine as well. Had my pegs.

Just google imaged the bike and boy does it look cheesy to me now with the padded gaurds on the handlebars and stuff.

reply

The first thing I always did when I got a new bike was take off all the stuff I should've left on; Chain guard, reflectors and pads .

I had an old Mongoose Expert. I loved that bike so much. I wish I had it now, but unfortunately I sold it back in the late 90's. I do still search the web to see if I could find another one. Gotta love nostalgia.

I can't remember the brand name. Maybe you can help. :-)

Remember how the GT bikes had the downtube that was bent down at the very front of the frame? Well, there was another brand of bike that used the same bent tube, except it was on the top tube of the frame, and bent down in front of the seat post. That got the top tube out of the way for the stand that was around the seat post. If I recall correctly, it was literally the same tube, as in made on the same assembly line; with some being used as the down tube on GT frames, and a few used as the top tube on the brand of bike I am thinking of.

I think that there was some sort of business relationship between GT and the brand I am thinking of. It might have even been a different brand that was actually made and sold by GT. Much like when there were Lemond road racing bikes (designed by Greg Lemond). Lemond bikes were actually manufactured and sold by Trek. People could go to a bike shop and see Trek bikes, and Lemond bikes, and there was little or no indication that they were both manufactured by Trek.

I may have to go start searching around on the Internet to see what I can find. I haven't thought about this in over 20 years. I just can't remember the name of that brand.

Hmmm. I'm thinking maybe a Dyno?

I have a Leap Blade. I got it from Canadian tire. I eventually want to invest in a really good BMX bike, but since it was my first real bike and I was just learning to ride it and are learning to do basic tricks it's fine.

How do you expect to get through life?On an 80cc Dirt Bike it will take me anywhere I need to go!

reply

Ok ok, I first started on a GT Pro performer w 3 piece aluminum crank, sealed bearings/bottom bracket(about $800 CDN at the time). I used to race at track 2000 milton, Canada. Then I went nuts on dads credit card and part for part bought the best parts I could find in all the mags. Aha $ 1500 bucks later I ended up with the lightest fastest bike I ever rode!

all chrome Badd and co Frame, Bullseye crank, BB and hubs, 21" rims (the skinnys), Powerlite bars (remeber the curve!!), Revcore pedals (made beartraps look tame)

This bike was Awesome!

Thanks RAD!

Back in the early 90's had a Diamondback Viper, GT Mach One and Mongoose (can't remember the model)

They were sweet rides and did the job but always wanted a Redline.

reply

Awesome everybody. These bring back memories. Keep 'em coming.
