why did Brett slap Mr. Hendershot in the face?

I never understood why Brett had the nerve to go up to Mr. Hendershot and slap him across the face, I'm surprised Mr. Hendershot didn't do anything to her.

Because when Deke ask where his father is, he says "Ah Dunc (Duncan) got scrubbed by one of them big boys out there. Tough break kid" and it was a dick way to tell him that his father was run down

He also didn't seem to express any sadness or sympathy when he told Deke what happened to his father either, I don't blame Brett for getting mad at Hendershot.
