'Love Touch'

Rod Stewart's song is the highlight of this film for me, but unfortunately you have to wait almost two hours to hear it. What on earth does that song have to do with "Legal Eagles," anyway? I was expecting a frothy romantic comedy, but instead I got a run-of-the-mill legal thriller – and what a horrible title. Oh well, great song.

Hello, Trainscreen! "Love Touch" has always been a guilty pleasure of mine, but I have to say it seems misleading to tack it onto this film because there's little loving or touching in "Legal Eagles.". This is mostly a stolen art caper. Fortunately, I was able to find "Legal Eagles" at my local public library, so it didn't cost me a cent (other than what I pay in taxes, of course).

I remember the video playing on MTV back in '86 – I believe with Rod Stewart in the courtroom with Redford, Hannah and Winger. It make it look like this film is a sex comedy, which it most definitely is not. It's odd that Ivan Reitman directed this, because it's not quite a comedy (though fails at drama in my book).

Oh yes, "American Anthem" starring Mitch Gaylord! I bought that film for a buck and finally watched it a few months ago. It's highly forgettable, sort of like "Flashdance" with a guy battling the odds. Will he win? Do you need to ask? It's like those teen dance films these days – all the rage on opening weekend, but forgotten two months later.

"American Anthem" does have an excellent soundtrack, particularly featuring "Battle of the Dragon" by Stevie Nicks and "Take It Easy" by Andy Taylor of Duran Duran. I have that also. 1986 was a pretty good year for soundtracks: "Top Gun," "Ruthless People," "Pretty in Pink."

That's interesting that "Legal Eagles" started out as a documentary on Mark Rothko. I could see that. The film is about Darryl Hannah's attempt to retrieve a painting created by her father, a famous artist who died in a fire that destroyed most of his collection. Turns out a shady art dealer has been selling counterfeits. Robert Redford and Debra Winger are dueling lawyers on her case. There are a lot of chase scenes, two inevitable romances (Redford-Hannah and Redford-Winger but not, sadly, Hannah-Winger), and plenty of '80s synth music. I think the Rothko doc would have been better (as long as they preserved the soundtrack).

No, I don't think "American Anthem" is out on DVD. I don't think there's a big demand for it. If you want, you can have my VHS, if you still watch tapes. But I'm keeping my vinyl! Send me a PM if you're interested.

Was it "Arthur's Theme" or "Julie's Theme" that you liked from the soundtrack? (Not to be confused with Christopher Cross' song from "Arthur.")

Yes, Janet Jones played Julie. And you're so right about "Stick It" being a virtual remake of "American Anthem." I don't know how they roped Jeff Bridges into that one, but maybe he was fond of his co-stars. ;-)
